Why Was Mickey So Keen For Rocky To Stay Down?

In the final round when Apollo knocks Rocky down, Mickey seems incredibly keen that he not get back up again. "Down, down stay down!" he cries.

Why would he have done this?

Are we to surmise that Mickey had placed a large amount of money on Apollo taking it in the 15th round? Unfortunately this seems to be the only logical explanation...

The beating Rocky got in that fight was insane. Mickey was looking at Rocky as a son. He was begging him to stay down because he didn't want Rocky to get killed.

But the fight was almost over. I get that logic if he was screaming it earlier in the fight but he'd already been knocked black and blue by this stage.

All he was doing at this point was trying to stop Rocky having a final chance to get a lucky shot in and knock Creed out.

Did you even watched the movie? The only time Rocky got knocked out was in the 14th round. That's where Mickey started begging him to just stay down.

There is zero evidence to support your claim that Mickey had money on this for Rocky to lose. What a stupid fucking thing to assume.

He wanted the fight stopped to avoid serious permanent damage. Even in Rocky II Mickey also says something to the effect of "the beating you took should have killed you".

You're too late - already pointed out...

But 14th, 15th makes no odds to the point really - fight was close to finished. Rocky had been pummeled long since...

No reason to want to steal Rocky's chance away - which did indeed come. Should have won in the 15th if not for the corrupt timekeeping.

I have no fucking idea what your talking about.

Maybe you should rewatch the movie then? Or at least the final round...

It wasn't the final round. There was another round after that, as well as time left in that round. Plenty of time for Apollo to do even more serious damage to Rocky, if not kill him. Rocky's eye was already seriously injured, and his nose was broken. Mickey was just trying not to get him killed.

Duke was doing the same for Apollo. He didn't want him to go out for the last round. Which would have cost him the title, and been incredibly embarrassing.

It wasn't the final round.

That's a fair point. 'Twas the 14th.

Which reminds me of the fact that I used to be outraged at the fact that the final round was so short! I think it was maybe something like 90 seconds, certainly well short of three mins!

What was going on with that - surely the timekeeper didn't have money on Apollo taking it on points? Because he was very clearly about to be knocked out by Rocky, who was cheated out of the title...
