WHAT IN THE WORLD??

OK so I just spent 2 hours watching this movie...its the worst movie of all time! I sat down thinking "hey its got sean connery and audrey hepburn in it, its gotta be great" and then I watched it. "I LOVE YOU" so she friggin kills him? what kind of sense does that make? its just a really bad version of romeo and juliet. And even Romeo and Juliet don't put on such a pathetic performance! This movie was just a waste of time...

Marian didn't kill him. Robin was already dying, Marian's poison was to make his death quicker and painless.
Besides the hideous wound Robin receives in the duel, an additional clue of his imminent death is provided in the line he speaks as he enters the abbey: "Vespers it must me. What kind of abbey is this? No one rings the hours." Robin's sight is dimming; he thinks it's evening when it's broad daylight.

"I'm such a moody fellow; it depends upon my mood."

Very good to note Minglemist. Yet another detail that explains the situation-if you're attentive enough to notice, which many viewers apparently aren't. But if you notice all the subtle details(the final wound during the sword fight, how delirously-giddy Robin is)it is clear that Robin is fatally wounded and wouldn't have recovered. Which is way Marian does what she does.

As to why she poisons herself as well, there's even some foreshadowing there earlier. When Robin asks her why she's leaving, and she answers "Because I will do everything for you but mourn." As to the argument that a nun wouldn't commit suicide, I think Marian has abandoned her vows at this point(note the earlier scene before the peasant-believers arrive where she asks Robin "Could there be two rooms in our house next time?") She was hoping they'd be able to live together again. Then the rebellion occurs.

Thanks for the spoiler without a warning, JACKASS!!

The Doctor is out. Far out.

....It says right on the front page that if you are visiting that page, then expect to be spoiled. This movie came out in 1975, for Pete's sake!

Do people still have to post spoilers for the Titanic sinking? Geez. :/

Riiiight... because this movie is JUST as well-known as "Titanic", or "Star Wars", or "The Crying Game", and there's NO possibility somebody might be seeing it on TCM for the first time?

Think.

Don't defend the morons. It's like joining their ranks.

The Doctor is out. Far out.

I haven't seen the Crying Game either, but you wouldn't see me BAAAWWWWing because someone posted spoilers, I'd accept the responsibility of the possibility of spoilers as soon as I stepped on the IMDb page at all. Coincidentally, it says RIGHT ON THE FRONT PAGE that "It is assumed that no one who is diligently avoiding spoilers will be visiting this page in the first place."

I'm not siding with the morons, I'm pointing out that people that BAAWWWW about spoilers are obnoxious. ESPECIALLY when it comes to the message boards on here, a full half of which are all spoiler threads.

TL;DR: Stop yer cryin'.

i too just cant see this as realistic, especially when she says she loves him more then God.

It's one hell of an admission to make (espescially in those days) and shows real love. This isn't some cheesy 'Titanic' romance, this is the real thing and brilliantly written. See also Romeo and Juliet.

marian would not kill robin let alone herself

"I will do anything for you but mourn"

love in this case doesnt seem to conquer all,

I've got news for you, brownish.......

life continues after our physical bodies die.

Unlike you, this film does not have a religious agenda......

because she killed herself and you know what the Bible says about that

And she didn't CARE. That's real love.

"The hour is come but not the man"

A shame you feel that way. This is probably the best Robin Hood film ever made, and Richard Lester one of the greatest historical directors alive.

I very much love this movie...I have been studying James Goldmans plantagenet projects for years and this is a worthy addition to THe Lion in Winter. I wish someone would film Myself as Witness, we could have the full story then...
Meanwhile the film to my mind is just about perfect, it has some excellent romatic dialogue...it captures Audrey Hepburn at a perfect mature age....I also cherish the supporting cast, especially Robert Shaw and Nicol Williamson. The score is awesome too. Just an all around good movie
It is not our abilities that show who we truly are...it is our choices

While I agree with you that it wasn't the best film in the world but I kind of liked it in a way of...well Marian and Robin are older and they want to be together but fate seems to always keep them apart. So Marian decided to keep Robin from leaving her by killing both him and herself and Robin seemed to consent to it cause he requested that they be buried wherever the arrow he had shot landed at. Action sequances was terrible the lines were not the best but I still thought it was okay. I have seen worst movies.

I think this film made a wrong turn. What could have been a touching portrait of love in the golden years failed. Sexism in the cinema circa 1976?
The film makers undermine Marion. Was it a foregone conclusion that because a woman spent years as a nun she be bitter and most likely psychotic? Because she's without a man?? (Can someone else find a different motive for this?) Up until that point she was not a weak character.BAD writing!Good opportunity lost!
Plus the soundtrack is horribly maudlin.
