Caught Logans Run on TV must've been about 8 or 10 years old. Anyway it freaking terrified me - the Carousel with the over 30s in the robes and scary Jason/hockey masks eerily rising up as they get obviously killed as everyone cheers the way the sandmen chased down the runner then he got brutally killed by those vicious gas blot guns then crop dusted by the floating angel guy. Then Logan chills out dialing up some half naked jenny aguater for sex. Well that was it my folks decided enough was enough and turned it off and I was sent to bed with all those terrifying images in my head of this futuristic horror film with religious overtones. Next day I was fascinated by what had seen and checked out this old SF magazine I had that I remembered there was an ad for Logans Run in the cinemas and saw it was rated A (PG) and was like uh? as figured it would have been an easy AA or X (15 or 18 rated). Also later checked out the cert on VHS that was around then and yep..PG.. (then again Jaws was a PG too and how horrific was that). Anyway cuz I only caught the opening it seemed even more powerful and scary than if had seen the whole film that would've put those eerie scenes in some context as it turned into something like Planet of the Apes. Then again when finally caught the rest of it few years later thought wow if id seen the ice cave scene with the robot storing all the bodies that would've really freaked me out.Anyway it belongs in that 70s preSW future biblical horror dystopian SF genre along with the Apes movies and the other Heston movies, and Rollarball etc. In fact its pretty much the last of those right cuz next year was SW.

anyway news about the remake up and running again made me purchase LG on dvd and give it a rewatch and tbh its even more horrific than I remembered

Awesome story, one of my favorite scifis. And the OP is spot on, the beginning is downright disturbing with the sandmen having such fun blasting people into goo which gets mopped up by the maintenance robots. "Run, runner!"

I just googled the latest news on the remake, and as of last month they say it's on track with director Peter Craig (X-Men Dark Phoenix) and the screenwriter from Hunger Games. That bums me out because it sounds like it'll turn into another forgettable action flick, but I guess we'll see.

One reason why I'm actually hoping for a remake is that the original Logan's Run is in DIRE need of restoration and blu-ray release. The current blu-ray is barely better than the DVD. So usually when a movie gets remade, they also cash in on remastering/re-releasing the original. That's all I'm waiting for.

I thought the blu-ray looks fantastic compared to the DVD. best version yet. not sure how much better it could get being old film. at least not without a lot of "digital destruction".

Actually Simon Kinberg is directing Xmen DP. He is only producing the remake of Logan's Run. Some dude named Ryan Condal is writing it. Currently no director attached to it AFAIK. This is a relief to me since the Hunger Games were not especially good.

Production-wise, Kinberg is all over the place. With highly stylistic results like Legion, high quality action like Xmen 1st Class & Mr&Mrs Smith, to bottom tier dreck like Fantastic Four and Designated Survivor. So his presence means nothing apparently.

Only thing I know for sure about the new story is that the age of Carousel is 21 instead of 30. I will bet $5 that this will be a heavy handed effort that leans too obviously on modern politics.

You and I are around the same age, OP. I had a similar experience except that I was able to watch the whole thing. My parents were strict but did allow me to stay up late if there was a sci-fi movie or Godzilla flick on. They never monitored what I watched on tv so I got to drink in all the adult content in shock while keeping a sideways eye on the door into the tv room. I was a little disturbed by lots of stuff but especially Carousel. Even more exclamation points shot out of my head when they ignited the money to start a fire (or was that the tv show? ... hmm).
Speaking of the tv show, it was not very good at all but I devoured anything sci-fi back then so I was a fan. I was disappointed that they went with a Farrah Fawcett looking Jessica 6 instead of someone closer to the enchanting Agutter. Also the inclusion of an android way off base.
To this day, I get a nice Logan's Run nostalgia when I'm in the right kind of mall.

Let’s hope the remake has Francis as BALLARD instead of cruelly killing him.

I was 18 when it came out, so I saw in the theater. I had read the book when I was, probably, 13, so I was a bit disappointed in the story being restricted to a domed city and the brief, almost pointless trip to DC. And the model-work was not impressive - it all looked toy-like with the dead giveaway of large water filled canals (water never scales well).
Still, it was fun and the Jerry Goldsmith score was wonderful.
More entertaining than the movie was a massive article in Cinefantastique which gave lots of insight into the production and how the Nolan and Johnson screenplay got replaced with something that had a few good ideas but relied on stuff that was already a cliché in 1976 and generally tossed all logic out the window... And that's compared to an original that was not long on sensible extrapolation.
That was the year that the first Star Wars trailers turned up at Star Trek/Science Fiction conventions... "Somewhere in the galaxy this may be happening right now..." (The forgotten, original tagline) And the visuals in the trailers alone blew Logan's Run away.

I saw it in the theater when I was 10 with my mom. I really enjoyed it and was not disturbed by the violence or imagery. I don’t recall seeing the flashes of nudity in Box’s cave, however. I wonder if I missed it or the censors had removed it for the theatrical run. The only movie I remember seeing with my mother that had actual nudity - and a rape scene at that - was Excalibur.
