Why does Amy Irving act so shocked

to see the pail of blood? When she says she's going "Out out!" to her family it seems like she's in on the whole deal.

reply

Yea I didn't get that either. Why'd she need to rush to the school promptly at 8pm if she wasn't in on it??

reply

She's not in on it at all - possibly clearer in the book, where she gets blamed despite not knowing. I always took it that she saw Carrie as her and Tommy's 'project' and wanted to see how it had gone for her.

reply

That's how I saw it too.

reply

Yes, me too. I never thought that Sue was in on it. She just wanted to see how the night was going.

reply

She just wanted to see if Carrie was having a good time. Mrs. Collins made her feel horribly for what she did to her in the locker room and she wanted to try to make things right.

reply

No, she wasn't in on it. When she discovers the pail full of blood, she rushes to stop Chris from pulling the rope. Also it was pretty clear that she was trying to let Miss Collins know about Chris dumping the pail on Carrie, but she got thrown out of the gym before she could tell her. Sue wasn't in on it and that is pretty obvious.
