He was such a nice man. he got along with just about everyone he met. he found a way to care about and accept people. No wonder he made friends so easy.

He was a nice, friendly, charming old man. But that was one of the points of the movie -- even this friendly old man, whom everyone seems to like, still ends up lonely in the end. All the relationships that we see in this film, all he people he befriends -- they all turn out to be evanescent. Thus, the movie tries to drill the universalness of loneliness.
