Actually, you don't have to be a cat lover (though I am), though it helps to be a people lover.
Paul Mazursky really hit a home run with this one. Saw it at the theater when it was first released. Back then, a little film like this actually had a shot at distribution and the big screen. Anyway, I never forgot it and always loved it.
Do yourself a favor and rent it. (sorry, no CGI or explosions)
