I think now the Shining is scarier than the Exorcist. The Exorcist has become less scarier over time and as I watched the Shining a few days ago, it scared me to death!!! I think the Shining held up very well and is terrifying. Back in the day though (referring to the 1970s), The Exorcist was the scarier film....

shareThe Shining has become laugh out loud funny to me. I think Kubrick's true genius in making TS was making a movie that would transform from horror to a parody of horror films.
As for the The Exorcist, I need to watch it again to reevaluate its horror factor.
The european cut of The Shining. The longer american cut had slightly unintentionally funny parts and I'm glad Kubrick got rid of them.
shareThe Shining isn't scary at all. In fact, it's laugh out loud funny at times due to Jack Nicholson's over the top performance. That's not a negative though, without Nicholson it wouldn't be half as entertaining.
shareI have never found The Shining to be scary at all. The Exorcist scared the hell out of me! The Shining seemed very cheesy to me at times but it was an okay film, in my own humble opinion :)
shareIMO the Exorcist is still scarier. Even the music score still gives me chills. Although some scenes like head spinning around is now laughable.
