1) Awful
2) Men
It's not perfect, it's evidently uneven tonally and the performances are.. variable to say the least, but if you have an iota of interest in the history of horror and exploitation cinema, anyone with a brain in their head and willingness to engage with the material will be able to appreciate that it is an important landmark in the rape-revenge sub genre of horror thillers popular in the 70s.
Because of its notoriety and its willingness to confront taboos, it will continue to be seen as a seminal piece of horror / exploitation cinema for decades to come which is something I can guarantee you won't be saying about the crap we get served up from idiots like Rob Zombie, today.
1.) I like the movie, it is one of my favorite horror films of all time, not one I want to watch all the time but I defiantly think it's undeserving of all the negative attention it gets.
2.) Im a girl:)

1. Very good, it was graphic but that's the essence of a slasher film. There was a solid story at the core, which lesser films never care about. Critics blast the acting; I thought everyone gave decent performances, including the two cops who supplied comic relief. This was an almost Hitchcock touch, although Hitchcock was more subtle and successful.
2. I'm female.
I just finally saw this movie yesterday. I had bought the unrated DVD some months ago as I heard it was really really good and I absolutely love horror/slasher/thriller/suspense flicks.
It was much much better than I expected.I love the gritty feel of the movie and the actors and actresses all did fantastic jobs. I especially loved all the actors who played the criminals. They were phenomenal. This movie will haunt me for a very very long time.I will eventually see the remake but I know it won't be as good.
To answer your second question I am a female.

1.) Infuriatingly bad.
2.) Female
I love it. It seems tame in this day and age, but you have to remember when it was made. The acting is truly great (I am always overcome with sadness and compassion for Mari and Phillys, and genuine fear of the criminals) and it sticks with you. Admittedly, it could be better but I love it. And I'm female.
