Not that I have anything against Harry Morgan/Col Potter, but I wonder if they had kept Frank as CO after Blake's departure. With Less on scene time the producers could have little by little undo the silly aspects of the character which in part made Larry Linville quit the series.
shareWhat would have been great is if the writers had given Frank gradual growth, developing him into a more sympathetic, realistic character instead of leaving him just a cartoon villain. It probably would have been interesting enough for Linville that he would have stuck around.
shareI've been thinking about this for a while and the best way to keep Frank vital would have been to promote him on air and make him a visiting officer such as an inspector. Have him on maybe 5-6 times per season. Still gives him an opportunity to butt heads with Pierce but does not wring the character stale.
