minor nitpick

Im assuming bob was a successful phyciatrist and they live in a very nice apt building so I find it a bit odd he has a small tv(13or 15 inch) you would think he would have like most people a large console tv.he doesnt even have a separate tv for the bedroom.

reply

First, he's a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. Second, it's just a tv show.

We were a very middle class family, we had a large 2 bedroom house in the burbs. Electronics were very expensive back then. We had one tv in the family room...a 1970 19" Zenith color tv. In the mid 70's we bought a 13" portable black and white tv for the kitchen. This way mom could catch the news while cooking dinner. VCR's were so expensive, we didn't get one until the 80's. Not one of my friends or neighbors had 2 color tv's. Back then, people very much lived within their means.

reply

Highly intelligent people don't need a tv in the bedroom.

50 Is The New Cutoff Age.

reply

On the other hand, he was the first sitcom character to own a VCR.

Great point. Many apartment interior upgrades, but a dinky TV. Even blue collar working stiffs had bigger screen console TV's in the 70s.

reply

Back in the 70's televisions were pretty expensive. Having one in the bedroom as well as the living room was not very common.

The Hartley's apartment also had a seldom seen den. One of the first episodes shows Emily giving Carol a tour of their apartment and she asks her if she'd like to see the den. Back then, if you had a den, that was generally the place for the main TV.

reply

Never thought of that. Makes sense. On Bewitched they had a den and there was a second TV in there.

On The Dick van Dyke Show, Rob WORKED in television and the Petries only had one set. It wasn't even one of those bigger floor consoles. It was a small one that they sometimes wheeled into the bedroom to watch at night.

My parents got a portable TV for their bedroom when I was about ten. My dad always called it his "nightlight". My parents would put it on and both of them would fall asleep!

Not everyone has a TV in the bedroom though. As much as he liked watching TV, my ex-husband would NEVER permit a television in the bedroom. There's no way I could have stayed up watching TV while he was trying to sleep. He was a very fussy, light sleeper. I actually preferred to read in bed, but I had to do that in the living room! Some people can't fall asleep with any lights or sound in the background.

reply

Unless I'm misinterpreting pretty badly, the so-called "den" is the little alcove to the left of the kitchen. There doesn't seem to be a door on it, so it wouldn't be a particularly good spot for a second TV.

reply

Some folks don't watch much TV and see no need to spend a lot of money on one. As many have said, back then TVs were relatively expensive. Even today there are people who watch very little TV so why have more than one?

reply

With Emily around, Bob didn't spend much time watching TV.
