why didn't they just walk back in the direction they came?

If I remember correctly there was some kind of brick wall near the place where they stopped for the picnic, suggesting some kind of establishment, why didn't they just go back past the car in the direction they came and not further on into the middle of nowhere?

She was portrayed as having previously developed few practical skills in life, she was receiving a formal education that was apparently concentrating on manners and accent - that was covered in the film. She failed to do quite a few things, right?

Quite a few years ago I heard a report where a family relied on GPS to take them to a destination.
They ended driving up a mountain road and were stuck in snow a long way from any type of civilization.
I smacked my forehead as how stupid this was, because I'm a paper map type person.
But not everyone has the same skill set another one of us might have. Stuff happens.
Wonderful movie, btw.
