To the 285 Anti-Semitic pricks who gave this a 1

Frak You!!!

"It's not about Money

It's about sending a message

Everything Burns"

reply

ok totally agree but just as importantly love the way you said it... right on!!

reply

Just thought that it was worth mentioning that a person rating Fiddler as a 1 is as likely to be from the "I hate musicals" crowd as to be an antisemite.

Either way it's stupid. They are different strains of stupidity, though.

reply

In my opinion this should definitely be in the Top 205, it's my favorite film, Besides The Dark Knight, and Godfather&LOTRs Trilogies.

"Introduce a little Anarchy

Upset the Established order

And everything becomes Chaos"

reply

Nope, its very unlikely that the 1 ratings - 283 of them at this writing - have anything to do with musicals themselves, because other musicals like West Side Story or Oklahoma don't have anywhere near the number of 1's this film has. A rating of 1 means hate, and no other quality musical attracts anywhere near this much hate.

Anyone calling this film one of the worst all-time has be blinded by something, and anti-Semitism would be the only explanation that makes sense.

reply

The reason the OP is an idiot is because of the fact that Jews run Hollywood. Schindler's List is about the Jews as well, That's in IMDB's top 5. So where's the so called Anti Semitism there?

reply

because other musicals like West Side Story or Oklahoma don't have anywhere near the number of 1's this film has

In general, you're just flat out wrong on that one. For Fiddler, 1.9 % of the total number of votes are 1s. While the rate for Oklahoma! is somewhat lower at 1.3 %, it has gotten many fewer votes in general (well under 1/3 the number of Fiddler) so it isn't necessarily the most stable sample space (plus, in general the movies with fewer votes, the less widely seen ones, seem to attract a lower rate of 1 votes). Meanwhile, West Side Story has gotten 1.9 % 1s, a rate virtually identical to that of Fiddler. (Fact checking is a wonderful thing.)

Beyond that, such musicals The Sound of Music (2.1 %), The Wizard of Oz (2.3 %), and the # 1 American musical of all time (according to the AFI's "Greatest Musicals" list) Singin' in the Rain (at a whopping 2.4 %) all have a *higher* percentage of 1s than Fiddler does.

Yet others such as South Pacific (at 1.8 %) and The Music Man (at 1.7 %) have gotten rates of 1 votes comparable to Fiddler's.

I don't doubt that there are some anti-Semites among the people who voted a 1 for this movie. However, that is *not* "the only explanation" for a given individual to vote that way. There are people who vote in a remarkably binary fashion: according to whom everything is "great" or "horrible", so if they don't particularly like something it becomes a 1. There are people who seem utterly incapable of relating to anything either made or set before they were born, or in a country they've never been to. And, yes, there are some people who react that viscerally badly to musicals in general. (And that's all ignoring the unfortunate IMDb phenomenon of people who give 1 votes to movies they've never seen just to try to manipulate its score lower than one of their favorites.)

reply

Well, some more facts.

When I made my comment back in March, the percent of 1's for Fiddler was well over 2, I don't remember exactly but I believe it was 2.4. I know that at that time West Side Story was around 1.5, and Oklahoma around 1.0. Since then, WSS has picked up approx. 100 1's, Okla. much the same while Fiddler has picked up almost all non-1's. I don't know about those other titles you mentioned because they were not things I checked out at the time.

I still smell a rat. The fact that people have come along and tried to hide the rat only convinces me all the more he must, in fact, exist.

re: "A rating of 1 means hate..."

Do you mean the noun, *hatred*?

reply

My understanding is the 1s came from the people who wanted Zero Mostel to have the lead instead of Topol.

reply

Yours is the most trivial usage of the epithet "anti-semitic" I have ever come across. Let's hope it at least made you feel better.

reply

What a stupid post...If you dont like the film you are an anti-Semite?You are stupid just for thinking it.Maybe people gave it a 1 because they just didnt like it.

reply

I can't understand why anyone would give this great movie a "1", but for what its worth 1,165 oddballs also gave the Sound of Music a "1"

Truly, no accounting for taste!

I love this movie. If someone hates this movie though that doesn't make them an anti semi. Most men/boys hate musicals and they are the ones that post the most on imdb.

reply

"Most" men/boys (primarily from Western culture) "hate musicals" because they have been socialized that liking musicals is unmanly/effeminate. That's "girl stuff". Boys are supposed to like cop movies, thrillers, sci-fi, raunchy comedy, horror movies, etc. Serious dramas, romantic comedies, musicals, etc. are what girls are supposed to like.

reply

My family was the exception then for one musical:Evita. My daughter and I fell asleep on it and my two sons and husband watched it through and loved it. My sons are now married and Gulf War Vets so they are completely masculine. They were just brought up to appreciate all types of media and perfermances and my husband was raised in Hollywood.

reply

No...it is simply because that in the real world...people do not break out into "song and dance." It has nothing to do with the "masculine vs. feminine" argument. It has to do with realism and believability.

reply

When one watches a musical, one must expect people to break out into song and dance. To expect otherwise is ludicrous.

reply

Movies are not the real world, their Arts and Entertainment.

This is ridiculous. One of the most needed elements of Theatre is the suspension of disbelief. So if you are going to attend a musical you basically know and accept the story will be told in song.

reply

Hating this movie makes someone an anti-semite? I hate YOU, but does that make me against your race, religion, or creed? Get over yourself.

reply

Is this movie about Arabs? People who hate Arabs don't like this movie? I thought this movie was about jews but I guess it is about Arabs.

I thought jews hated Arabs, making them the true anti-semites.

I guess I was wrong.

The things you learn on IMDB.

reply

I am neither Jewish nor Arab, but, the definition of 'Anti-semitism' is "Hatred towards Jews."

Now, whether that definition should be expanded or not, I don't know. But, until it is, it officially refers to hating Jewish people.

I should report your post, but, I'll ask this instead; what makes you think those who voted the film a "1 star" were anti-Semitic?

Maybe they were just kids who thought musicals were stupid.

reply

or grown women who enjoy musicals as a genre but not this one in particular, based on their own opinion of the quality of this movie? :)
