Now, as an adult, they just seem sort of cheesy, but I remember being terrified as a child! Anyone else have that problem?

Yup! Me too! I saw it when it originally was in theaters in 1970 (I was five at the time) and both of those scenes scared me terribly! It's funny what passed for "G" rated back then... Look at "2001" for another example... Both of those films would be rated "PG" today...
