I like the song, but it become annoying pretty quickly. Knowing that she is dead, every time it plays, I'm bracing myself for her death, and see him deal with her passing for the rest of the movie. What "Gonna Fly Now" did for motivation and working out, the love theme of this film did for death. I went to a wedding, and this this the song that was played after the couple took their vows.

It was like "Lara's Theme" in Doctor Zhivago. They played it over. And over. And over. Again. Gag me.

But the first two notes are one of the most referenced examples of the minor sixth interval. 😛

Listen to Immortal Technique's rap song "Dance With the Devil." The first two bars of Francis Lai's Love Story theme are used to underscore some pretty potent lyrics about the bankruptcy of gang life, selfishness, and materialism. It will change your perspective -- you won't be able to hear the theme without thinking about the story he tells.

Apparently it was embedded in the zeitgeist that they even made one of the Schoolhouse Rock segments (Figure Eight) have similar music (at least in part): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-1B3WuuyBE
