For UK viewers, FilmFour, a digital film specialist channel, has recently shown The Conformist. It is due to be shown again on 7/14/05 and will doubtless be shown again. Record it on your DVD recorder. This seems to be the only way of getting a DVD copy of this magnificent film, until Paramount gets its act together, assuming that it ever will.

There IS a DVD version of this film. It was released in 1997 by AmuseVideo in Japan The product number is ASBY 1143. I purchaced a copy in 2000 from an online importer. Unfortunately it is now out of print. Sometimes you see DVD's of the Conformist available on Ebay, perhaps they are this version. The down side is that it will only play on a region 3 player, or as I have, on a region-free player. It can also be played on PC player if you change the region code. Most PC DVD players will allow you to change the region code 5 times and then freezes the 5th region code. But of course playing a DVD on a PC player is not nearly as good as playing it on a dedicated player with a good TV.
My DVD has the original Italian language and Japanese subtitles that can de turned off. But, unfortunatately it has no English subtitles. I wrote my own English subtitles using the dialog from the dubbed version. And wrote a program to display them on my computer. I sit the PC monitor just below the TV screen. It works quite well.
The up side is that the Storaro's colors are gorges and the image is much sharper than the VHS. The sound, although still mono, is Dolby Digital, thus far better than the Paramount VHS version. The DVD includes the extra five minute scene of Marcello's pre-marriage party with the "dance of the blind" fight of the fascist thugs attending. The scene does include sound. But the scene was not included in the dubbed version, so I had a Japanese friend translate the Japanese subtitles for those five minutes. Another friend translated the lyrics of the closing song from the DVD subtitles. I have posted the English translation of the closing song on the thread "the song at the end of the movie".
