Who was your favorite character: movie v. book?

The book was great, and the movie was a pretty good adaption.

In the book, Nately was my favorite character, no questions asked. Artie Garfie is amazing, and I was so happy that Nately was played by one of my favorite singers lol. once I saw Arkin as Yossarain, though...

He was the perfect Yossarian! haha

Who did you like, if you read the book or not, movie-wise?

reply

I liked ALL of the characters in the book. In the film, I liked Orr (Bob Balaban) the best.

reply

I haven't seen the movie yet, but book-wise, I love Major Major. I guess I just feel kinda bad for him as his life was presented in his chapter :3

General Dreedle, hilarious attacks towards Moodus, and Orson Welles!

In the book my favorite character was lieutenant/General SCHEISSKOPF. No other character even came close and the book was full of great characters. He was sadly cut from this mediocre adaption. In the movie Milo, Chaplain and Major Major were shadows of they're original self. Orson Welles and Alan Arkin were great Art Garfunkel was ok. Others just waisted their talents, especially Mike Nichols.

I agree with the movie being a pretty tepid adaptation, which is not to say I didn't enjoy it. The novel's scope and tenor is a difficult one to frame.

Dunbar was my favorite character in the novel, (I even named my dog after him), but where did he go in the film? They "disappeared" him.
How ironic.

You have the name wrong-- you're thinking of Norman Schwartzkopf. Heller's character is SCHEISSKOPF. Look it up on a translation web site!

reply

Wow. I read the Finnish translated version (in retrospect I probably should have read the original) and I could swear that in that version the name was Schwartzkopf.. Strange.. I looked it up but most of the references to the book are to the original not to the translated version and the book was borrowed from a library so I can't check from there.. It would be silly to change the name of a character so it's probably my mistake, but damn. I'll edit the name, thanks!

Movie: LTC Korn

Book: Ex-PFC Wintergreen

Loved Yossarian in both, and Milo was a close, close, second.

Major Major was sad in the book, but in the movie, he really did seem like a jerk.

Catch 22 is definitly one of my favorite books. I had to read it in High School and I have read it several times since for pleasure. There aren't many books I read for school I say that about.

The movie is decent but as metioned here by others, not easily made into in a 2 hour film. I thought the casting for the film was great especially Alan Arkin as Yossarian and John Voight as Milo but come to think of it so many of the actors and actresses in the film were very well cast and Mike Nichols is a wonderful director.

My favorite character, that's a tough one but I'd say Doc Daneeka.
I have to smile just thinking about it. :-)
Thank-you Joseph Heller!

reply

Yossarian would probably be my favourite in both.
However in the book Major Major was a close second, and in the movie General Dreedle was hilarious.
Milo was also awesome.

reply

It's either Major Major or Milo for me...in the book that is. The movie doesn't have as much of them in it, especially Major Major Major Major.
