Probably one of the worst movies I've seen. It's a musical but there are other movies out there that aren't constantly inundated with inane song and dance that has jack to do with anything. These kind of movies remind me of the song and dance play from A Passage to India that the movie was implicitly lambasting. People randomly singing and dancing like fools is stupid, it always was, but to add insult to injury this movie actually won best picture. Probably the worst pick for Best Picture aside from The English Patient or No Country for Old Men.

The movie had completely unlikable characters. Isn't it just so convenient that EVERY single adult in England that is in charge of the welfare of children is either evil or cruel? Makes me wonder how that country didn't render itself extinct. Dodger was an annoying idiot, I was hoping he would be killed, but sadly it never happened. I also hoped Fagin would be killed or at least arrested, but that also didn't happen. On the contrary, the two idiots dance off into the sunset, kind of appropriate for this crapfest.

About the only compelling thing about this movie was Bill Sykes. The actor did a good job in making him a cold, loathsome sadist that got what was coming to him at the end. However that tiny sliver isn't enough to save this poor excuse for a movie. 1/10 stars, I would give it 0 if I could.

Like Nostalgia Critic has said in the past, a movie should be able to be assessed on its own merit without having to know anything of its source material. Harry Potter is based on a book, but I enjoyed the movies (except for the last two) without ever having read the books.

To me, it falls in to the so bad it's good category.
Whenever I want to piss myself laughing at a stupid film, this seems to come on TV.

For you this was a terrible movie. Yet for countless others it was great. Still many others probably thought it was ok. Movies are very subjective by nature so no one opinion is absolutely right or absolutely wrong.

Emm No Country For Old Men is one of the best best picture winners

Honestly I do like this film a bit but 2001 a Space Odyssey should've won best director over this. That film (at least the part that take place in space) look far ahead of its time. While this just looks and feels like every other film from the 60s. Of course that's just my opinion. I feel like the academy are fools for never giving Kubrick anything except best special effects.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think 2001 was even NOMINATED for Best Picture. However, in addition to winning for Best SFX, it was nominated (and won) for Best Original Screenplay (by Clarke and Kubrick).

oliver is a very good film I think. Lovely songs, excellent acting (especially Ron Moody as Fagin), and it sticks reasonably closely to the original story, though if course a lot is left out.

It has nothing to do with convenience. Dickens, who wrote the book, based it on his own bitter experiences living in a workhouse as a kid. Apparently, he never got over it, and you can really sense the hatred and bitterness he had for the system in Oliver Twist. All the adults are portrayed as cruel morons, except for Mr. Brownlow and Nancy. Dickens may have realized how over the top he was being, because the book grows less caustic when Nancy and Mr. Brownlow take Oliver under their wings.

Whilst it's perfectly reasonable to dislike musicals as a genre I can't for the life of me see the point of going to the trouble of ranting away on a message board for discussing a specific example.

Incidentally, lest the possible pitfalls hadn't occurred to you I wouldn't advise trying out opera or ballet either.
