This film has no plot
Its just random bullshit.
shareIt's probably a lot cooler and meaningful when on acid.
sharePlot is overrated.
shareI wouldn't go quite that far, but it was a very dull, plodding film, and any plot was hard for me to see. share
Its just random bullshit.
It's about our past, present, future and how the star child or birth can't be explained by evolution.
shareThe main idea that they wanted to portray in this movie was meant to be a warning to potential invaders from other worlds. They'd pick up the broadcasts of this movie and see that we have a fearsome air defense system comprised of monkeys throwing bones into space ready to take out orbital intruders. After seeing this, any would be space invaders would move on to find an easier target.
shareI do love this movie but I understand the hate. I don't fault anyone for disliking the movie. Truthfully, it could be edited down by 20 minutes and lose none of its impact. The slow, deliberate ballet of technology and the desolation of space can still be imparted on the viewer without the large investment of screen time. And the end could be trimmed big time.
The plot is a thing of beauty and this is deservedly a classic. I would rewatch it more often if there was a 2001 digest edit.
What part would you cut?
shareWouldn't cut an entire part. I would shorten many scenes. I would edit the docking scene down by 80% and probably lose Blue Danube entirely. 40 seconds of silence while it docks. Done. I'd also edit the end light show down by 95%. Add in to that assorted space scenes that are a little too long getting a little trim around the edge and viola.
I get it that Kubrick was conveying the slow deliberation of everything that happens in space travel but that doesn't make in engaging. The idea could have been conveyed with less abuse to the viewer (Lynch does this slightly too often as well). No one want to really get the authentic grass-is-growing experience.
I love this movie. Even with its drawn out scenes. I just think that I would like it more with a haircut to its play time. I also think it would have more fans. Perhaps its time use is its plebeian filter.
The plot is only the history of humankind from beginning to end.
