The Worst Film Ever??

I just saw this, and, well, it was the worst film I've seen in a looong time.

Everything about it was awful, to the bad acting from Lee Marvin, to the terrible camera-work, out-of-place music, stupid sound-effects, and worse plot.

Seriously, this was SO terrible. Maybe it's just because it's dated, but I've seen films 30 years before this that aren't dated, so it has no excuse. Lee Marvin is that guy we all know and hate - the one that loves himself so much he probably kisses the mirror in the morning. And to believe he's a sex symbol! Wow.

I've seen a fair few bad films in my time, but none that I have really hated all the way through. The whole theater (it was at a place which shows older films) was laughing at all the unintentionally funny moments, and never at the actual jokes. What a load of *beep*!

I agree, poor acting, hardly any talking, short ending, confusion.

Why was this the worst film ever? Was it the fact that the director didn't hold your hand to let you know wassup? You are nuts. Stop getting high before you see films.

Despite/because of all its flaws this film is amusing. It lacks a plot, seems to emulate Nouvelle Vague directors like Goddard. Lee Marvin was an action star, not an actor, and he performs well in that mode, especially in fight scenes. Angie Dickinson gets naked, if only for a second, but I'll take that over an eternity of Angelina Jolie.

This is one of the best American crime movies ever made....it dismays me how rockets like the guy who hates Lee Marvin are allowed out to the cinema without taking thier medication....stroll on!!!!

i just saw this on tcm the other night (bless 'em!). i've always wanted to see it. i think the people who don't care for it just don't know much about the effects of the french new wave on hollywood by 1967 (like a writer above noted).

also, if you know ANYTHING about boorman's subsequent films (this was his second, and he was just beginning to stretch out), you'll really enjoy seeing how some of his delerious weirdness got started (deliverance, zardoz and excalibur are all directly related to this film in terms of style, mood and use of sound).

anyway, seeing lee marvin slap people around is always good for my money. he rocks. also, it was a delight to see john vernon in his first role.

it always makes me laugh when people say a movie like this is "the worst ever!". it usually means they've seen few films.

"Rampart: Squad 51."

John Vernon's career did not begin in Los Angeles and this was not his first film.

reply

Just saw this last night, and the credits say "Introducing John Vernon".

Really liked this, immediately was reminded of 'Payback' and was surprised to learn it was a remake of this story based on the Richard Stark (Donald Westlake pseudonym) novel "The Hunter". I was urged to see 'Point Blank' in the liner notes of the French movie "Le Samourai" starring Alain Delon, also about a bunch of sociopathic criminal scum that wear suits and ties and always have some inscrutably cool dialogue while they punch, shoot and chat up the ladies. Nice~!

reply

I don't know about John Vernon (except that he was already a busy stage and television actor in Canada before he made this film), but this was definitely NOT Sharon Acker's fist film, she had already played the female lead in both stage and film adaptations of Kingsley Amis' novel LUCKY JIM in England about ten years earlier. But then, a few years earlier, the film PARIS BLUES had "introduced" Serge Reggiani, despite the fact that he had been appearing in French films since 1946 and was a very popular leading man. I guess if they don't know you in Hollywood, they figure you don't matter to the rest of the world either . . .

Seen more than 8,000 :-)

lee marvin slap people around is always good

Slap? The stuff I saw him do in this movie was far worse than any slap I have ever seen!

reply

"Lee Marvin was an action star, not an actor"

Uh, no, he was an actor and a damn great one.

And Point Blank is a masterpiece, plain and simple.

reply

People saying ".... must be the worst movie ever" declare that they're boring and have nothing interesting to say.

Whenever the "typical" movie fan declares something to be the "worst movie ever", I immediately want to see that film. Because the "typical" movie fan usually likes CRAP!

reply

Agreed. Most people hate everything worthwhile. Kurosawa? Nah! Once Upon a Time in the West? Crap! Barry Lyndon? Boring!

Everyone's a critic, but very few know anything about art. It's like how many Americans prefer fast food to high-quality sushi.

When people say that a 40-or-so year-old film is "the worst ever" you have to assume that they are a) young (under 35 or so), and b) ignorant.

That said, this is a confusing film the first time you see it (and the narrative is puzzlingly non-linear). Vladimir Nabokov famously remarked that great books can never really be read, but only re-read. I suppose the same is true of great films. (I'm uncomfortably aware that "Point Blank" might not actually be a great film, but it is certainly a technically accomplished one by a director who has made great films.)

Nevertheless, this is a strange film with which to have followed "Catch Us If You Can" (definitely a great film)!

I think people who say that Plan 9 from Outer Space is the worst film ever they have some justification, and that movie's 50 years old.

I don't. The fact that it's so notable and memorable for being bad kinda makes it good. A bad film would most likely be so easily forgotten and there are movies so bland that they do just that.

reply

Or opinionated (why I love films)

reply

I think if you're going to list something as The Worst Ever you should have to list The BEST Ever so we know what kind of fool we're dealing with. Although listing Point Blank as the worst ever pretty much gives us an idea.

Someone earlier wrote, "Whenever the 'typical' movie fan declares something to be the 'worst ever', I immediately want to see that film."

I'd say that's a good policy. Especially in this case and in the case of Barry Lyndon. Personally, I just try not to be around "typical" individuals in general.

reply

This has to be a wind-up right? Are you talking about the right film?

reply

I'm watching this movie at the moment for the fourth time, in my very humble opinion one of the best Movies of this type ever made. Recently Mel Gibson released a very poor version of this film, now if he couldnt better it with all his clout...

Well, this will be probably erased by an administrator, but I need to say it: why, in every single board's topic, is there always an *beep* who writes: Worst movie/actor/actress ever ? Basically, if we listen to all these losers, all movies are crap, all actors, actresses, directors are incompetent, and nothing good has ever been made. That's... deep. At least these people help themselves to be identified as the group of Worst People Ever.

reply

I never reply to posts. And the reason is the one you mentioned right now.
