The most self indulgent piece of cr*p ever committed to celluloid?

Without a doubt!!

reasons?

Not the worst movie ever or anything, but, yup, completely bloated and muddled. The story is so loose and disjointed, it just makes no sense.
I can just imagine what Bond fans must have thought when it came out. Its not a loving tribute to the character or Ian Fleming, but pretty much a slap in the face.

The best thing in the movie is the young Woody Allen. His one-liners are very funny, and you can tell he wrote them himself. Maybe if can handled the script himself, we could have something worthwhile. Unfortunately he didn't.

It's a common misconception that each and every film has to make sense in order to have any worth.

If you like watching films that make no sense, that's your problem. Most humans don't, which is why this film is rotting with a 5.1 rating and few like it.

I agree, kind of sad really.

Excluding Tarantino?

BTW I really liked this, it is 9/10 in my book.

You do realize this movie was a spoof on the bond series, right?

-And there's a lot of humor that you would miss if you hadn't lived through that particular era. It both regards, it's not unlike "Our Man flint." It really even sets the stage for Austin Powers. Same basic humor & attitude.

Personally I love this movie.

Me too. I still love it.

Agree completely. This movie sucked, and sucked hard.

Yes, there were some funny lines here and there, and sure, I could star at Ursula, Barbara, and Jacqueline all day long, but it was so weird and disjointed that it couldn't possibly work.

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Poster vancleef1980, film critic Roger Ebert said most of your comment way back in the 1960's about this film.

You should at least come up with an original criticism.

Wow its been 2 years since this post and yes he did and he was right, i couldn't have put it better myself.

Yes i understand its a spoof, its just a terrible one at that.

I love all the actor's involved in this film, i love James Bond and even Austin Power's but this trash is just the worst of the overblown swinging 60's fluff that was being carted out by the truck load at the time.

I totally agree! It just didn't seem to make sense. Complete waste of time

I think the OP's heading is overstated, but I can well understand how upset he or she is. It's not just that the film is disjointed and often incoherent, or that it is a comic parody that is, a majority of the time, unfunny. There are two other factors for me.

One is that any of the fans of James Bond who came to this movie were almost literally poked in the eye with a total lack of respect for Ian Fleming's creation and, by extention, their enjoyment of it. It very much feels like they're being told they're fools for ever wanting to follow the exploits of James Bond or for enjoying spy movies in general.

Two is that it simply cannot be ignored that so much TALENT, both in front of and behind the camera, is wasted in such a horribly cavalier fashion. I am a huge fan of Peter Sellers, for instance, and it really IRRITATED me the first time I saw this movie that he chose to be so bland, so uninteresting. I know it was his choice, but the more I look at this film, the more I realise he had early on figured out that the movie was going to be such a mess that it didn't really matter WHAT he did, he still wouldn't be able to salvage much from it. He still has a few good moments, though, such as his bit with the racing car. And maybe there's an incredibly subtle joke in the fact that he basically plays the most normal person in the movie.

And I'd be dishonest if I didn't admit there are moments in this movie that I enjoy, such as Woody Allen's performance. My favorite sequence in the movie, oddly enough, is the Berlin spy school with Joanna Pettit. She really is, to me, both beautiful and delightful in this movie. What a smile! And the moment where Vladek Sheybal (one of my favorite little-known character actors) is chasing after her in the street, firing away fruitlessly, and then turns to the MP watching him...and just shrugs...I will always love that throwaway moment.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I will always love the Herb Alpert/Burt Bacharach theme song. Can't help it.
