This was a stupid show

Come on, people. The premise of this show was so, so, stupid. A nun that can "fly?". It's one thing to become airborne due to your cornet (that magically doesn't fly off your head) but it's another thing to fly when you want to or control your flight. I just saw an episode with Paul Lynde where Sally Field is flying next to an airliner - how unbelievable is that? I love sitcoms of the 60s but this one was SO stupid. Also, the ridiculous accents that all the other actors have - why was this supposed to take place in Puerto Rico in the first place? You'd think they could have found real bilingual actors who could play the part but no, they get non-Spanish speakers who think they can fool the public. In fact, in some episodes, when they were supposedly speaking Spanish, they weren't! I speak Spanish and that WASN'T Spanish but rather some mangling of Spanish mixed with Italian or whatever. The show was filmed in L.A. where there are thousands of actors with Spanish accents. Then there was an episode where they held a Jewish wedding at the convent and everyone sang "Hava Nagila" - unbelievable! I'm Jewish and I'm shaking my head. I like dated shows but the problem with The Flying Nun is not that it's dated but rather IT'S STUPID. I only rented to see the psychedelic episode with The Sundowners.

All very stupid but I enjoyed watching Sally Field. It's no wonder that today she wants to distance herself from this mess of show. Gilligan's Island is stupid too but better!

lol I agree with you, but people like different things. Not really nice to ruin someone else's enjoyment.

I'm watching this right and saying, "Wtf" and what is up with those ridiculous hats they wear? ahaha

Anyway...yeah, I agree with you, but I can see why some people would like it.

reply

Those "ridiculous hats" are based on the actual (and even more ridiculous looking, IMHO) cornettes worn (pre-1964) by a real order of nuns. Just FYI.

I was born in the 80s and i would much rather watch shows from the 60s like the flying nun than the stupid reality show crap today with all the Snookies and Kardshians or anything else associated with that moron Ryan Seacrest who feeds us *beep* and tells us it tastes good

I am 50 and remember the first run episodes of this and yes even as a kid I thought it was silly but you know what? This show has something most shows don't have today and that is called charisma. Every actor on this show had some level of charisma. Most TV actors today have none. I like SVU and Mariska Hargitay has it but most don't.

Yes it was a fantasy but it is far more fun to watch now than most of the mean spirited garbage they jam down our throats now. Most shows now are just vulgarity without cleverness, actors you wouldn't walk across the street to see.

So yes this show was stupid but it is still more fun to watch than today's crap.

reply

"It's stupid, it's stupid, it's stupid!" It's a TV show, you idiot. It was a comedy that wasn't mean to be taken seriously.

Bullroar.

Till Death Us Do Part (the British show which begot All In The Family) was funny, relevant, and realistic. Not just bullroar about a nun that flies.

Other shows of the 60's that should have become hits but didn't due to the tastes of people like yourself that were funny, intelligent and realistic were:

Love On A Rooftop

He & She

Run Buddy Run

Accidental Family

My World & Welcome To It

There have been a few others, but I can't remember them now. All the ones I've mentioned, however, are better than caca like The Flying Nun-it's a tragedy we won't be seeing those rerun instead of The Flying Nun

Baloney.

I'm 30. I wasn't around in the sixties, and didn't say I was, so how could my tastes have kept these shows from becoming hits? I didn't say I was a fan of The Flying Nun. It was just a comedy show that was not meant to be taken seriously. It ran two years; it didn't become a hit. I was responding to the original poster who went on tirade about this show as if it started a world war. This was a short-lived show from over forty years ago. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Till Death Do Us Part was a hit show in Britain. It didn't suffer because of The Flying Nun.

Would it have been better if it was "The Flying Rabbi"?

reply

I agree with the OP that it was a stupid premise. The winds on that island were supposedly very strong and they lifted Sister Bertrille. But she certainly couldn't have flown around the way she did. lol

But on the other hand, I watched this show as a child and the illogical premise never entered my mind. It was a fun show for kids. I feel sorry for parents today who want to allow their kids to watch current sitcoms. Very few of them are suitable for youngsters or even for adolescents. Some of the adult type humor on TV today would've been censored in MOVIES, let alone TV, back in the sixties.

I really couldn't get into The Flying Nun, Gilligan's Island or The Brady Bunch now that I'm an adult. But it was great that kids had some clean entertainment to watch back then.

I agree. See my satiric "introduction" I made.

I agree totally. This show stunk. I presume Sally Field needed the money. Alejandro Rey? He was a treasure. As were a couple of the nuns (not the reverend mother - poo-yah).
