Alright for Children?

Is this alright for a 13 year old? I don't really want to trust the ratings given seeing as they might be the original ones from the '60s. This sounds interesting.

reply

Is it?

I think it would depend on the 13 year old. If he/she has watched movies like Silence of the Lambs or such then it would be fine. But if not it does have some weird scenes in it, though there isn't a whole lot of violence. It's just the premise of kidnapping and being held against your will that may be a problem.

sure let your kids watch this, if you want them to grow up to be rapists.

reply

Kidnappers, dirtmerchant. Nobody was raped.

Don't let your kids watch Night of the Living Dead, they'll grow up to be cannibals!

Ah ha ha ha ha ha!

There's no swearing or sex, and there's not a lot of overt violence, but the theme is mature, very dark, and misogynistic. I decidedly would not screen this film for teenage children.

reply

Definitely.

I wouldn't show this film to a child the age of 13, and probably not to one under 18; it is very dark and disturbing. I saw it on video when I was in my thirties, and as a female it left me feeling uncomfortably exposed. Still, it's a good film watch for the direction, acting and cinematography.

No - not all right for 'children'.

13 y/o is iffy.

This is a very disturbing film with a conclusion that is even more disturbing and very futile.

I would not put this film into the mind of a 13 y/o.

I saw this at the theater when I was 13. And as the parent a parent of a teen (and by all accounts a pretty decent, hip and fair Dad), I really wouldn't recommend this for a 13-year-old. As a teen, I was too focused on the victim's sexuality and vulnerability, and not nearly enough on the horror of her being held against her will and her ultimate fate. I realize that many of today's teens are in varying degrees, desensitized to such things, but that's no excuse for adding to the desensitization. Better to have a discussion about what constitutes rape and so-called "sex crimes," and why there is such a market for films that portray women, particularly adolescent females as fodder for a variety of horrors, usually variants on rape/maiming and/or murder.

seeing as how your post was a couple of years ago, this might be irrelevant...but next time you're wondering whether to watch this with your kid (assuming this thirteen year old is your kid, and not you) why not just watch it beforehand to see if he/she can take it or not. I mean none of us here know this 13 year old. they might be more or less mature then we might think

reply

I watched this movie when I was 17 or 18 and it disturbed the hell outta me.
And I saw silence of the lambs when I was 13 and didn't think that movie was half as disturbing as this one. So no, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone at that age.

reply

I'm seventeen and watched it a couple of weeks back and I can't say I was "disturbed", but it certainly dealt with some dark themes that might not be suitable for children. However, my eight year old sister saw the ending with me and I don't think she was very affected. Then again, if she'd watched the whole thing, it might have been different...
