Two part question

Personally, I think this is the best film I have ever seen. For those who have seen this film, can you name a film that you consider superior to this one?

Also, does anyone know any information about a director's cut that is longer? According to imdb.com, it says that there is a 147 minute version compared to the so called "milestone restored special edition?" which is only roughly longer than two hours?

Another, very different, but also excellent japanese film is 'Kwaidan'. I urge you to see this and Onibaba for atmospheric japanese movies.

Suna no Onna is definitely one of the best classic Japanese films Ive ever seen. Onibaba, as pretty much every one else mentioned is also right up there. I would be hardpressed to pick a favorite. Another classic Japanese film I would recommend is Go Go Second Time Virgin.

i think pretty much the only film i've seen that came close to matching the greatness of Suna no Onna for me was Sansho Dayu. i still didn't quite like it as much though

For me personally this is the most perfect movie ever made, I've watched it numerous times, nothing comes close to this really.

Maybe not superior but equally striking is Kwaidan from Kobayashi. Check it out!

There is as good movies as this, and few better. Onibaba was good, but not better. I saw the director's cut from tv. I want to buy that one.

Not superior, or even as good, but if you enjoyed the themes of isolation/desperation/resignation amid the motif of sand, check out Casa de Areia (House of Sand) http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0373747/.

So many movies, so little time...

I really recommend Teshigahara's 'Pitfall'... whether it's 'better' than woman of the dunes is a whole different debate-- one thing's for sure, they're close!! Pitfall is out on the same 'masters of cinema' dvd range that's recently released 'onibaba' and 'kwaidan' (another two gems)...:-D

Re: long version

Netflix distributes the Criterion Collection version which is that long. It also contains a 30 minute "video essay" which relates the movie to the director's other works and to other contemporary Japanese films. I liked it: Sharp, but not pedantic.
