ive only seen a shot in the dark twice, but i enjoyed it alot. im thinking of getting the pink panther movies with peter sellers on dvd (except for trail of the pink panther, which has clips of sellers) because - how can you kill off inspector clouseau, bring him back in the curse of the pink panther and then have him completely dead in the dreadful son of the pink panther?! no, the first five films, the pink panther, a shot in the dark, the return of the pink panther (my personal favorite), the pink panther strikes again, and revenge of the pink panther are the absolute best. had edwards not tried to revive the franchise without sellers, this would have left an even bigger legacy on comedy.
shareIt depends on what kind of humor you're looking for, I think. A SHOT IN THE DARK is not as fast-paced slapstick roughhouse style like the later PANTHER films (in my opinion), but it is better paced than the first film in the series, and gives Sellers much more opportunity to develop his Clouseau character, and to put him in to more interesting situations. It's my favorite of the series, but it is slightly different in tone than the later three with Sellers. Being based on a stage play, they opened it up enough so that it works really well as a film.

Funny? No, it's not. It's bloody hilarious!
CLOUSEAU (out of the blue): What's that you said?
HERCULE: Nothing inspector.
CLOUSEAU: What do you want?
HERCULE: You sent for me.
CLOUSEAU (angry): Of course I sent for you!!!!

You murdered her in a writ of fealous jage!
shareThe gags where Clouseau tries to work undercover but keeps getting arrested for not having a license to do whatever he's doing. (selling balloons, paintings, hunting)
shareI found the new pink panther much much funnier, of course shot in the dark as a movie overall is better but i was disappointed by the lack of laughs, sellers is great though. ** out of ****, not a full house but a pair of aces, lol
shareMaria Gambrelli: "Your coat!!!"
Clouseau: "Yes, this IS my coat..."
Maria Gambrelli: "But it's on fire!!"
The sheer look on his face and the hilarious scenes that follow just had me rolling on the floor...
One of the best pink panther movies, with the best being "THe Pink Panther strikes again" in my view.
This is definatly the best of the PINK PANTHER movies.
"You ought to get out of those clothes! You'll catch a death of pneumonia!"
"Yes, yes, I probably will, but it's all part of life's rich pageant, you know."
My personal favorite Pink Panther movie, I love it. I laugh everytime, and pick up new things every time. My favorite scene is the Cato fight.
The best part of waking up is Satan in your cup.
Hilarious! Certainly (IMO) the funniest of the series.
There are so many scenes in this, it's impossible to list them all...but well worth watching just to see Herbert Lom's (Chief Inspector Dreyfus) increasing mental breakdown (complete with twitching eye), bought on by Clouseau's ineptitude... "Idiot! Nincompoop! Lunatic!"
Also the great line (Dreyfus): "What you've said all along Clouseau, qualifies you as the greatest profit since General Custer said he was going to surround all those Indians!"
"That will not be neccesary, I will have this case cleared up in a matter of seconds"
Anyone...is this the one where in the beginning he is searching the house for clues, ends up in an exercise room (with the light off at first because he turned on the treadmill instead!) and decides to try out the parallel bars and dismounts right down the stairwell? I can't remember! But I love that part!
Don't you wish you were me? I know I do!

I always start laughing and cannot stop myself at the commencement of the various nightclub scenes where Clouseau somehow avoids numerous assination attempts, at the expense of innocent bystanders.
shareyeah, if you can't laugh watching this movie, you better check your pulse, cuz you must be dead! there are just so many hilarious moments in this one!

THIS MOVIE IS BRILLIANT DEVINE COMIC INGENIUS. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE SMARTEST MOVIE I HAD EVER SEEN, KNOW ONE REALISES WHY IT IS FUNNY AND THE REASON IS BECAUSE IT IS COMPLETLEY OFF THE WALL HILARITY FROM START TO FINISH. THE ACTING IS MAGNIFICANT, THE STORY LINE IS GREAT BOMB MOVIE 10 OUTS OF 10 IM BUYING IT ASAP!
shareWhile strongly encouraging people to see this film, I would actually tell anyone of like age or younger (I'm 31, btw) to approach the film with minimal expectations... I'd tell them to expect an old-time comedy with little modern-day crudeness, yet loads of originality, charm and wit. Most of these people should then be interested enough to at least check it out, but probably without expectations of any genuine belly laughs..... ;)
I'd then wait with great expectant joy for the moment they come back saying, "Wow, what a smashing film!!!"
The best. 10/10
Clouseau: Who's that?
Maria: That's Dudu, she's dead.
Clouseau: Dead Dudu?
The nudist camp scene,Elke Sommer naked, the naked band playing, funny? Are you s**ting me?
shareDreyfus: What about the maid?
Clouseau: The maid?
Dreyfus: Was he jealous of her too? He strangled her.
Clouseau: It is possible that his intended victim was a man and that he made a mistake.
Dreyfus: Mistake?... in a nudist camp?
great film :P
Reading this post one can sure pick out the 'youngster's' Ha! I'm 52 and saw this when it first came out and have loved it ever since. I was shocked when Peter Seller's died so young. This movie is also before Clouseau/Peters' 'accent' degraded in later movie's, just watched this classic again, (still only on VHS) and it's still funnier than Hell after 40 years & running. My Fave 'bit' is when Seller's 'break's the 'wall' while the maid's, George Sander's et. al. are arguing just before the light's go out. The look on Seller's face is *beep* Priceless! This movie is 1000 times better than that piece of excrement called Wedding Crasher's. I didn't laugh once at that film. But the 60's was a great time for Film Comedy starting in 1959 with the Marilyn Monroe Jack Lemmon Tony Curtis farce'Some Like it Hot! Other great comedies of the 60's,....Texas Across The River,..The Great Race,....The Russian's Are Coming The Russian's Are Coming,...and one of my other fave's,...
Dr. Strangelove! Rock On!
The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get!
Where the nudistcamp-clerk says something along the lines to Sellers, that he has to undress right down to his moustache, LMFAO
shareIt's actually the best of the Inspector Clouseau movies. Contrary to what someone else said, IT is better than 'Strikes Again' (which itself isn't even as good as the second-best Clouseau, 'Return'). It introduces the characters of Dreyfus and Kato. (Bear in mind that the original 'Pink Panther' was only about halfway about Clouseau, and about equally about 'Sir Charles Litton', David Niven. 'Shot', on the other hand, is fully a Clouseau movie.)
Clouseau's mispronunciation of words is only in its early stages here, and is not featured as extensively as it would be in the later films, nor is it as 'pronounced', if you'll pardon the expression. Probably better for its more subtle presentation.
It features a nice structure of 'repeated gags', such as the paddy wagon, and a series of misfired attempts to murder Clouseau. Other nice touches include unexpected bits, like a seated woman shrieking "My foot!!!" as Clouseau paces past her! Also there are clever ideas like Clouseau and Elke Sommer riding in a car naked, trying not to have their unclad condition realized by others, but having a bus pull up next to them, with all its passengers able to see downward into their car from their higher position.
So my advice, three years after the original post, is to go ahead and rent it!
