He was very handsome in this film, he was in excellent shape. But that chest hair ... why?

Because audiences then preferred actors who looked like real people, rather than looking like polished-to-a-chrome-finish supermodels.

I didn't really notice the chest hair. Or at least wasn't distracted by it.
