Darrin Asked For It
Darrin was never a victim but a prick with his anti witchcraft stance.
shareDisagree. Darrin was an honest man who wanted to make it on his own...his own way. I honestly can't say I would have had his will power though...but deep down...no matter what he had Samantha on his side and he could never fail.
American Horror Story Season 7: Donald Trump
Just another troll with a single-digit I.Q. Ignore him/it.
shareDon't worry gbennett5 when the boards close.
shareWTf is wrong with you gbennet?
I think gbennet is basically a decent person, but he/she takes these comments waaay too seriously and defends these shows as if he/she was a writer (he is maybe?). For instance, the OP makes a snarky comment that still has some truth to it: why didn't Darrin allow his wife to use witchcraft for good?
You could defend Darrin as gbennet does and that's fine, but a lot of reasonable people have asked the same question without being low IQ "trolls".
Sometimes Darrin didn't object to a little supernatural assist. In one episode he chastises her ALL THE WAY to a dinner with a client because she used a "speed up" spell to get ready.
Then they get a flat tire in the pouring rain and he hesitates getting out of the car. He keeps hinting that Sam could fix it. When she makes him fix it in "the mortal way". he gets angry with her for that!
There were a few times when he was okay with witchcraft. In the first season, "A is for Aardvark", he gets carried away with using witchcraft while he's laid up with a sprained ankle.
There's always inconsistencies in writing a long running sitcom, but overall, the premise of the show *required* him to be a dick when it came to Samantha's magic. I understand that even if it grates a bit.
As a man married to a wonderful woman, I would insist that she do what is natural for her, even if it's supernatural in nature - that's why it's always been a source of frustration for me to watch him exercise his will over her even though I generally like the series and still watch it.
When my wife and I watch together and the inevitable plot device pops up with Darrin not liking Samantha to use magic even if it's to make her homemaking chores easier, I turn to my wife and deadpan "if you're a witch with magic powers, feel free to use them". She'll then look at the pile of laundry and wiggle her nose. Nothing has ever happened. Bummer.
Overall, Darrin didn't want Samantha using magic. But in the case of some of her "speed up" spells to do housework, he'd gripe if he caught her in the act. But he didn't insist she undo the work.
In the episode when his mother called and was coming right over, Sam used a speed up spell and said with his mother "it wasn't a visit, it was an inspection." Darrin ran out of the house because he needed a shine on his shoes and a haircut.
Sometimes I think he just yelled to save face and not seem like a hypocrite. He established early on that he didn't want her using magic, so he had to be consistent and yell EVERY time.
Actually I respect Darrin more for wanting to support his wife and family on his own salary. He could have easily suggested that Sam could conjure up anything and everything they needed, e.g., a house, furniture, clothes, trips, etc.
The thing is, it's not simply that Darrin objects to Samantha using witchcraft. He has a blanket condemnation toward the Magical World in general. In the episode when he first meets Endora, he calls witchcraft "nonsense." I can understand why Endora (and Samantha's other relatives), as members of a blue ribbon witch family, find this comment deeply offensive.
As in the episode where Darrin berates Samantha for using a speed up spell to get ready for a last minute dinner invitation for an important client and then berates for not repairing the flat tire in the pouring rain, Darrin generally is only amenable to the use of witchcraft when it benefits him. Before the incident with the flat tire, the episode makes it clear that the invitation was last minute. It's made clear that not only would Samantha have to rush to get ready even if she had no other responsibilities, but since Endora was late arriving to babysit Tabitha, Samantha had to prepare Tabitha's dinner, feed her and bathe her before Samantha could START getting dressed for the dinner. Darrin's response was not that of a helpful sympathetic spouse, but of a self-absorbed, clueless clod who changed into his tux and sat out in the car shouting at Samantha to "hurry up."
Darrin also forbids Samantha from honoring some obligations she has to fulfill as a witch. In the episode when Darrin mistakenly takes Serena (posing as Samantha) on a second honeymoon, the situation has arisen because Darrin forbids Samantha from making a required appearance before the Witches' Council. Yes, he feels guilty about it, and tries to make amends by taking Sam on the honeymoon trip, but this is because he feels guilty about the harsh way he treated Samantha, not because he realizes that she has special obligations to the Witch Community.
I saw the pilot a while back and Sam does promise not to use it. I still think Derwood is mad as I would be happy to let her make my life easier but she agreed to what he wanted.
share..as I would be happy to let her make my life easier..
Allowing her to do magic would achieve that then. Why is she doing housework and cooking when she can just wiggle her nose and conjour up anything she wants?
shareAgree, but it's part of the show's premise - a regular guy unknowingly marries a witch and he wants her to be a regular "housewife". I wish my wife had that power!
So we have to just shrug this off realizing that so many more story lines could happen with Darrin and Endora constantly bucking heads over Samantha's magic.
Tony Nelson in Jeannie wasn't so much against Jeannie doing magic, but he did not want to benefit from a greed standpoint from her magic (Roger would have been a pig).
I always got bored with Endora and Derwood butting heads. It only works for so long.
Tony had a sense of humour and there weren’t any in laws. Roger would have had Genie set him up quite well. I would have done the same.

Margaret always respected Hawkeye as a surgeon more than she did Frank but after Frank left she was left isolated and gravitated towards the Swamp more. She never really bonded with Charles who replaced Frank. But yes, they changed the dynamic when needed and made for a different show. Bewitched just keeps the feud going.
