I think The Pink Panther is nearly twice the movie A Shot in the Dark is. I guess I've never been a big Peter Sellers fan, and I don't find his humor flat-out funny, just awkward and obnoxious. He is BARELY in the first film, which is more about the ensemble cast, the theme music and cartoon, and the impressive heist. I love the first film, but A Shot in the Dark is boring to me, with Clouseau having to carry the entire film and Elke Sommer, though beautiful, very boring next to both female characters in the first film. Not to mention that the mystery means we have no clear villain for most of the film, and yet this isn't Agatha Christie writing either. I find it very overrated (for the record, I found a similar film, Topkapi, boring too.)
On the plus side, Herbert Lom has more to do in the second film.
"The Pink Panther" plain and simple.

Return Of The Pink Panther is a very close second.
The Pink Panther Strikes Again is also very funny and contains possibly the funniest joke in the series (does your dog bite?)
Revenge Of The Pink Panther: I like it a lot, I think it's fun. Don't get the hatred for it.
Trail Of The Pink Panther: the first have is funny and almost feels like a real movie. But Clouseau "dies" the movie dies with it.
The Pink Panther: I just can't get into this one, I try all the time. But I find it boring, although some jokes I find funny in a vacuum but somehow watching it all together in a film sucks out the humor for me, weird huh?
Inspector Clouseau: I barely remember much about it other than how wrongly casted Alan Arkin is but I don't remember hating it so I don't have much of an opinion of it.
Son Of The Pink Panther: I can't remember laughing once. It made me despise Roberto Benigni until I saw Life Is Beautiful.
Curse Of The Pink Panther: While I can at least remember a FEW gags working it takes the bottom for ruining the Clouseau character and that is unacceptable.
THE PINK PANTHER. Not only for Peter Sellers, but for all the other excellent actors, director, and mostly the music - for me, the best Henry Mancini OST album ever!
