The ending (spoiler)

The boy sees the plane in the sky and he thinks it is a sign of the bomb about to be dropped. My question is whether he is wrong or was this whole thing for real? It is said by the principla that it was a false alarm but if it was, why was the plane there at the end? Was that part of the idea of the paranoia?

How does anyone think an airplane sounds anything like that? Did you see the vapor trail that this 'airplane' was leaving behind it? It clearly was not an airplane. As far as the false alarm goes we saw nobody who officially stated it was in fact a false alarm besides Principal Feeney , (Yes from Boy Meets World lol).

IMDB~2005

The very end of the film shows a bomber flying over head. Then a nuclear explosion. So yes,the alert was real, and they were nuked.

It is ironic that you asked this question. When my husband and I saw this movie, we saw the exact same thing but interpreted it differently.

The plane was flying over and the child was digging his hole, yelling "Stop Stop" and then the picture faded as the plane's engine noise kept getting louder. My husband was sure that it meant that the bomb detonated. My take, however, was that it was the child's "paranoia" to a normal plane flying over.

The ending was definitely left open to personal interpretation.
