God this thing is awful

I don't get the reverence attached to this film. It's a plodding, unsightly mess, pompously over-acted and stiffly staged. Elizabeth Taylor looks bloated, and Richard Burton chews the scenery unmercifully. I forced myself to watch the whole thing last night and it was not easy to keep from laughing in places. It's amazing what people would sit through in 1963.

Anything played wrong twice in a row is the beginning of an arrangement. FZ

You have no concept of what this movie represents. And you are ignorant.

Some years ago I was home from work sick, and I thought, Well, what better opportunity to watch CLEOPATRA - after all, I was sort of a "captive audience".

I watched half an hour and said, "It's not going to get any better than this." And that was that.

I suppose it's not the worst film ever made, but it's a shining example of how the road to hell is paved with good intentions, despite the participation of seasoned professionals.

Yeah - being a history buff, I liked the sets and costumes and even though parts must've been overdone and incorrect, it at least looked good. But to give it six hours was almost unbelievable.

The three odd hours we got were stumbling. I actually think the most interesting thing was 'the making of' etc that was shown on the DVD box set. I saw this retailed (In the UK) at £50 but decided to buy it for its film
historical value - saw it once reduced amazingly to just £5 - one of those things if you leave it long enough, it's cheap enough.

This film wouldn't have been so bad but for Liz's constant kvetching. When all else fails, I guess one uses bitchiness for acting.

$44 million was alot of money, but it wasn't all spent on Cleopatra. Cleopatra was the ONLY movie in production by the studio. The entire studio overhead was charged to Cleopatra. If a Fox executive in Hong Kong had a lunch meeting with a local politician, it was charged to Cleopatra.

reply

Actually as the late Tom Mankiewicz joked on the making of Cleopatra documentary, while driving out to the studio his father would joke; right now the head of Fox studios in Hong Kong (looks at his watch) is taking two hookers to lunch and is charging it to his picture (Cleopatra).

There was no other place to put the massive overhead!

The film fails historically like most Historical films, but I still enjoyed it a great deal, I LIKE the overacting, I'm sick of modern actors holding back when things should be dramatic and epic.

When it was being filmed, the adulterous Burton/Taylor love affair, or "le scandale" as he called it, was unfolding at the same time, hotly and heavily. They threw themselves into their roles & their passion was believed to be reflected in the film. For 1962/3, it was akin to Ingrid Bergman's disgraceful affair. Burton & Taylor saw themselves then became artas the lovers they played and life then became art. The book Furious Love details this - however, their real-life life continued for many years after tha

C'mon, guys, this isn't that bad. Sure, there is some dialogue that makes one cringe, but there are flashes of brilliance. An under-rated semi-classic

It's a great film. The performances are really great and even if they aren't, everything else can keep your attention. The dialogue is a bit to handle within the first viewing but it is witty and true to history for the most part. I love this film because it is without a doubt the most epic film ever made, it is absolutely huge.
I agree that there is a scene at the start of the second half of the film when Burton pretty much takes over is badly edited, that must have been where the biggest cut was made. And at the end Liz Taylor recites a line 9when Marcus Antonius dies in her hands she says, there has never been such a silence and doesn't cry) that to me seems very wooden and just uncalled for but it's very poetic in a sense. You can tell there was an edit there because soon as she says it, it cuts to Roddy Mcdowell. But the rest of the film she is wooden, and why not her husband just died again. It does play out more like a play than most sword and sandal action films of today so I figure most people now couldn't handle it and that's good. Film's like Troy are great for that but lack in everything else that this had. This focuses more on the history of Ancient Egypt which I am very interested and that helped me love it more than others it seems.
In my opinion this movie doesn't suck, in my opinion movies, movie appreciation, and movie quality now sucks. There will never be films in such high quality made again. This movies main problem was that it wasn't split into two movies. There are only very few Directors who are obsessed with quality like James Cameron for example. I appreciate this film for showing me what Ancient Egypt might have looked like during it's fall, closest thing to being there.

As far as I'm concerned Roddy is the best thing about it...when i watch it (as i did again today_) I usually start in the middle, right after the assasination when Octavian turns up. Its ok in its entirety once....but once was enough.Excellent set direction though.
