9. l'avventura
10. singin' in the rain

i know, 8 1/2 isnt on here because i replaced it with l'avventura. maybe that will change after i finish the second part of 8 1/2 today. but it was on there, and when i first saw it, i couldn't believe it. i'd take it over the visuals of star wars any day.

other criteria: i only allowed three foreign films on the list, along with 10 films from 10 directors, not 8 films from one director and 2 from two separate ones. these arent the best choices, but you can't deny these are some of the best damn looking films one will ever see. also, these are my personal favorites. there is no doubt in my mind that citizen kane stands head and shoulders above all of these. otherwise, what kind of film fan would i be?

The world doesn't just disappear when you close your eyes, does it?

reply

"8 1/2" is great, but you need to watch it with an open mind in terms of what cinema is... and wathc it more than once. If you're into Bergman and Lynch, you should like Fellini, they have many touch points.

Also, if you enjoyed Mulholland Dr and Fight Club, you have a wide range of films that deal with the same themes (and influenced those two films). Persona is one, and some others by Bergman. Also, try Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard", Altman's "3 Women" and Hitchcock's "Vertigo". All great films which will make you enjoy Mullholand Dr. even more (and Inland Empire, if you've watched it).

Also, if you're into "hardcore" chamber cinema, do try Tarkovsky. Bergman used to say he was the best filmmaker ever, and he probably was too.

Dogville is great, think a play from Brecht filmmed with a handycam... but some will say it sucks. It's the thing with people like von Trier, they always get the most extreme reactions. Most greats do.

And yes, I'm the guy from the Bergman board

Last film watched:
Inland Empire by David Lynch - 9/10

8. Punch Drunk Love (Paul Thomas Anderson 2002)
