Dr Who in America not as popular

I'm American and wonder if anyone could enlighten me on why this series is so long lived and seems so immensely popular/successful in the UK. I've tried to appreciate it but simply can't. I really do like most Brit tv series or film but don't get the Dr. Who. PS I don't mean to insult anyone.

Because different countries are different countries, and the 1960s (when Doctor Who first came to be) were the 1960s.

I asked my mother about Doctor Who once to know whether the Classic series ever aired in my country (neither US nor UK) and she didn't know the show at all. TV simply wasn't as international as it is now before the internet, and nowadays there's simply so much variety that it's impossible for everyone to be familiar with every well-known show. I know the names and general ideas of the most famous and popular old shows of my own country even if they were before my time and I've never watched them and they sound dumb, just because they are part of my pop culture history. Doctor Who is a big part of popular culture in the UK and some other countries, but that doesn't mean it's so everywhere, the same goes for most shows (there are exceptions like Star Trek, Friends or Game of Thrones which pretty much everyone knows even if they've never watched a single episode, but most shows aren't like that.) Like I remember once reading some list of the most watched TV shows ever in the US and there were things like M*A*S*H or Cheers that I had never even heard of before that.

Do you even know what honor is?

Maybe it depends on when you were coming of age. I was a kid in the 70s and grew up from age 7 or 8 on Dr. Who reruns on a Canadian station just across the border.
By the early 80s, I was permanently hooked, and the show ranks as my personal favorite.

I dont remember when exactly I first heard about Doctor Who, but I think it was in 2011 or 2012.

I never had heard of it before at all.

So yeah, its not as popular in other places than as in UK.
