I am really impressed by the number or Criterion-enthusiasts!!

So, I was wondering if any/all of you would help me out with the collection. Could you name the 10 best dvds that criterion has released?

I DONT want you to pick the 'best dvd' because they are your favorite films (although you might be tempted to!!)

I want some suggestions for the best release. Things like: the most extra features, best transfer, booklets, commentaries, special interviews, rare footages, etc.......

i know seven samurai and brazil are two of the best......what else??

and PLEASE mention the reason for your choice.

thanks, much appreciated!

reply

I love Criterion, but I really can't afford them.

I have "The Man Who Fell to Earth", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Ugetsu". I hope to get "In the Mood For Love" and "Jules and Jim" soon.

reply

I love criterion as well, and they are so expensive so I get a few every once and a while I have money and go to the mall.

So far I have Cries and Whispers, 8 1/2, Bande a part, Hoop Dreams, La Strada, The 400 Blows, and Jules and Jim.

I wish to get a lot more as well. Particulary those of Fellini, Bergman, and the French New Wave.

I also have films that are criterion films, but I just have different versions. Such films like Do The Right Thing, and Silence of the Lambs.

reply

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
The Royal Tenenbaums
Rushmore
The River
Jules et Jim
Cleo from 5 to 7

It's not many, but they're expensive.

Deathly Hallows <3

Accio Hagrid!

reply

I absolutely love criterion. Since they're so expensive my collection is pretty sad, but I am an avid Netflixer of criterion films. I own:
1. Brazil - Gilliam
2. The Double Life of Veronique - Kieslowski
3. General Idi Amin Dada - Schroeder
4. Gimme Shelter - Maysles, Maysles, and Zwerin
5. Naked Lunch - Cronenberg

reply

Jules et Jim
Le Samourai
Army of Shadows
le cercle rouge

reply

I only own one (The Royal Tenenbaums because it's a fantastic film and it was only $15 at Amoeba), but luckily my library has a very healthy collection--and my local movie store has nearly every Criterion ever released, even the rare, out of print ones--and I've seen quite a few:

Brief Encounter
Notorious
Rebecca
Written on the Wind
Eyes Without a Face
The Third Man
Summertime
The Virgin Spring
The Seventh Seal
Autumn Sonata
Charade
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Trouble in Paradise
Heaven Can Wait
Brazil
F for Fake
The Life Aquatic
An Angel at my Table
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Unfaithfully Yours
The Lady Eve
Sullivan's Travels
M
Scenes from a Marriage
The Killers
In the Mood for Love
All that Heaven Allows
Gimme Shelter
The Red Shoes
Black Narcissus
The 39 Steps
Diabolique

It's pretty hard to go wrong with Criterion.

Did he train you? Did he rehearse you? Did he tell you *exactly* what to do, what to say?!

reply

I just started collecting Criterion Collection movies last month

The Third Man (The New Edition)
I Vitelloni
Juilet of the Spirits
Bicycle Theives

I got these movies really cheap at Border's (last place I would think would be cheap on Criterion Collection movies). Of Course, I used multiple coupons so maybe that is the reason why I got good deal on them.

The Third Man and Bicycle Theives normally cost $39.99, but I got them for $22.99 each and I Vitelloni and Juilet of the Spirits normally cost $25.99 but I got them for $15.99 each.

reply

I've got
The Testament Of Dr. Mabuse
The Seven Samurai(3 disc version)
The Cranes Are Flying
The Virgin Spring
Samurai Rebellion
Videodrome
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

next on my list of Criterions to buy are the 3 disc set of Brazil and the Antoine Doinel box set
