Not as good as I expected - agree?

I had heard that this was one of the greatest love stories ever. I was disappointed. The acting was second to none, all three leads pulled it off convincingly and it looked great. The editing was above par, but the script (and story) did let it down for me. The narration becomes annoying and Catherine's infidelity becomes a bit "Yeah, she sleeps around, so what?" after a while. 6 1/2 out of 10. Does anyone agree (with the views or the rating)?

I thought the movie was very involving but frustrating. Jules is a doormat, Catherine is selfish, manipulative and narcissitic and Jim was the only one I had any respect for until the very end when I knew exactly what was going to happen but he didn't seem to have a clue. A well made movie with its good qualities but the ending really pissed me off.

This was the first time I've seen Jules et Jim. I've seen The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups) and thought it was much better, but am new to the French New Wave genre.

I'm not as familiar with the background of Jules et Jim, and didn't think too much of it as a love story. As part of a genre of the French New Wave, it was a good movie.

I'm not sure if that makes sense, but the movie making and realistic story was taken to iconoclastic terms instead of conventional story form. That made it an interesting movie even though I wasn't as moved by it as 400 Blows .

Put Dirty Harry in the IMDB top 250!

No, I don't.

I rated it even lower than you did, considering it basically a waste of time to watch, primarily because Catherine became irritating and increasingly annoying rather than more captivating. After believing all the hype about the film I was dismally disappointed with the shallowness of Catherine and Jim and at their demise, which by the time it occurred I couldn't have cared less about... Oskar Werner's Jules was the only character with any depth, in my opinion.

I agree. I'm giving it a 6. I enjoyed the first 30 minutes, but the rest dragged, the characters were unsympathetic, and the narration was too much, all telling rather than showing. The narration was especially problematic given all the subtitles; this may seem like a superficial complaint, but it was truly taxing for someone who doesn't speak French. I haven't particularly cared for most of Truffaut's films I've seen, but this was my least favorite. It seemed to say so little given all the narration and back-and-forth among the characters. The 400 Blows is a legitimate masterpiece and Day for Night is a beautiful and sharp product, but Jules et Jim became too hard to believe or care about past the first half-hour.

I would agree this film is not as good as its reputation. It may be that it was very original when it first appeared, but it does not wear that well in repeated viewings. Visually, it's still interesting, but the characters of the men are slightly thin, while Catherine's character is more vivid, but also extremely unlikeable. Basically, I couldn't stand her. It was impossible to accept that these two men would go through all of this over her. Moreau is attractive, but not in the way that usually drives men mad with desire, so I could not understand it at a purely sexual level. Truffaut's other early films are much better, imho: 400 Blows, Shoot the Piano Player, The Soft Skin (very underrated), I'd rate them all above Jules & Jim.

Completely agree.
