Jules and Jim or 400 blows?
Which one of these movies do think is better and why? I'm wondering because I have not seen either of them, but I have enough money right now for one of them, and I dont' know which one to get.

Buy both. Find a way to get both and watch 400 blows first because Jules and Jim will take you on another level, higher. In my view, Jules and Jim is way better on all aspects of the art of filmmaking: camera movement, cinematography, acting, and sound(the music, sounds - or absence of sounds in some scenes like when she jumps in the seine - and voices in J&J provoke a feeling I never felt before or after when watching a movie; something almost psychadelic that reaches down to your heart and shakes it). After I first saw it, I was so amazed by its formal beauty that I realized I didn't really follow the story. Contrary to 400 blows, there is something else behind the story and narrative of j&j. I don't know how to call it except complete mastery of the art of editing images in movements with sounds, to create a genuine feel. I can't really find words to express the magic of this film and i guess it's better if you stop reading anything about it and watch it with your heart wide open.
I have watched a lot lot lot of films (without sounding pretentious) old and new, and this movie is such a reference that it's almost shamefull to say you love it. It's like saying you like Monet to scholars in Art history: too mainstream I guess. But I have to admit, there is something about J&J that I have never seen in any other film. I just can't describe it.
I can describe it. Like when they race on the bridge and it's a close-up on Catherine and she laughs when you least expect it, or when Jim is rolling in the grass with Sabine, or when Jules and Catherine are in the bed together crying. I *beep* love this movie. *tear*
It basically shows that Truffaut has one of the biggest hearts in the history of cinema, and truly loves his characters, and the actors who play them, and what they represent for humanity.
I say this with all good humour but I don't think you can say "I have watched a Lot Lot Lot of films" and worry you are sounding pretentious, haha. Sounds more like you are a person with Enthusiasm, which is always a good thing.
share400 blows is my favorite movie of all time, so....
but definitely see jules et jim, it's great. if you live in the manhattan area, the ifc center shows a truffaut marathon once a year and the transfer for jules et jim was excellent.
Both are fantastic, so get both if you can. 400 blows, though is certainly a more accesible film (I think every one can agree on that.)
"That's okay, I wouldn't remember me either."
Without a doubt, Jules and Jim.
Truffaut had grown so much as a director by the time he made Jules and Jim.
It is the nuances of his beautiful characters and directing technique that make Jules and Jim so brilliant.
Jules and Jim is my all-time FAVORITE movie.
It's not the best movie ever made, simply because better ones came along, i.e. Fellini's 8 1/2 and basically everything by Bergman.
But I love no characters more in the entire history of cinema than Catherine, Jules, and Jim flawed as they may be.

Jules and Jim is more of a technical achievement. Both are very good stories and both are told very well. I would agree that The 400 Blows is a bit more accessible. I didn't like J & J until the film was over. They both are great films with their own beauty.
This statement is false.
The 400 Blows = 10/10
Jules and Jim = 9.9/10
When I encountered Jules and Jim this past summer, I was stunned by how many modern films had been so strongly influenced by it. Hell, Amelie is pratically Jules and Jim with a more accessible storyline. I immediately wanted to see The 400 Blows, but was weighted by other films and the onset of school. When I did see The 400 Blows, I was disappointed. Sure, it's a great film, but it has nowhere near the relevance Jules and Jim does to modern people. If we're excluding the subjectivity of how easy it is for any one person to relate to it, than Jules and Jim is simply on a technical level a better film.
With that said, both are excellent. However, I recommend watching The 400 Blows frist, just so it doesn't seem dwarfed next to Jules and Jim.

Neither. Breathless is the best of the french new wave.

Or it's not. Godard wishes he was as pure as Truffaut. He has never hit Truffaut's opus even with more than double the films.
