This versus Where Eagles Dare

My vote for WED also, but only by a thread.

I go with Guns, but it's close. WED is more like an extended Saturday-morning serial, really intense, non-stop and exciting, while Guns is more story- and character-driven. Not really a straight comparison.

I definitely enjoyed this but Where Eagles Dare is a REALLY good movie, this is just good. Definitely worth watching but Where Eagles Dare blew me away!

Two of Alistair MacLean's best going toe to toe...wow. They are both very suspenseful and that category is a push. Where Eagles Dare is much better in the action department and if that were the only qualifier it would win my vote hands down. The Guns of Navarone however is a much better adventure and for that reason it is my pick. I really like the movies and stories where the small group goes behind enemy lines on what is basically a suicide mission. TGON is right up there with Play Dirty, Northwest Passage, and The Horse Soldiers in that regards.

One other category in which WED really shines is in the surprise twists of which MacLean was a master. In fact the whole purpose of the mission was in regards to solving the twist, rather than just having to overcome the twist to accomplish the mission. WED is in that sense the quintessential Alistair MacLean story.

As a kid I went to see WED in downtown Las Vegas. I love this movie even with the Big mistakes. However I like Navarone better.

I was aware of the similarities of these two MacLean adaptions while watching "Guns" last night. I gotta go with Where Eagles Dare. WED is great whereas TGON is solid. For instance, the score of WED is one of cinema's all-time best; not to mention the entire opening sequence; and the action-packed final act as well.

Moreover, TGON has some blatant flaws, like the dated score, the lame miniatures, two dubious fight scenes (the knife fight in the boat and the "duel" with the German officer) and the final act is decidedly low-key compared to the ultra-thrilling WED.
