I'm against child abuse but Mary was an absolute monster. She destroyed the careers of two women and (indirectly) broke up a healthy relationship and caused one poor woman to hang herself! I so much wanted to see her slapped silly by the end.
I have a hatred for child abuse as well, but I did want to see what happened to that little witch. Mary was indeed a bad seed and the ominous music that played during the scene when her grandmother goes up towards her on the staircase led me to believe that she likely beat the hell out of Mary. It was obvious by how Mary widened her eyes and backed away while her grandmother slowly stalked up the stairs to her. I, personally, would have gone to jail because I would have beat the crap out of that creature. To think that there are children like that in the world disgusts and angers me!
No no you wouldn't have gone to jail. Considering what Mary did and how it destroyed the lives of three people she deserved EVERYTHING she got. In an earlier of these "These Three" from 1936 (where the lesbian angle was changed to a love triangle) you see Mary get slapped HARD at the end. I would have been happy just to see that in "Children's". I also wondered what her grandmother did to her after probably beating her senseless. That little monster was nothing more than a sociopath. Hopefully she sent her away to an institution for the rest of her life.
I'm glad I don't work as a teatcher or anything because I would have slapped a child like that so bad, some children can so manipulation and horrible monsters.
1). She was just a child who didn't really know or understand the consequences of her actions
2). If the film showed her getting severely punished, the criticism of lies and rumors becomes lessened. The movie wanted to convey the sense of injustice. This little girl ruined their lives so easily with a lie, and she just simply got away with it; she gets to go on with her life whereas the victims of her lie must suffer forever
Considering the current social climate, seeing people's lives ruined by simple and blatant lying seems the desired result, and the young lady is a blueprint and heroine for such behavior. Mission accomplished, cue the hurrahs.
