Baby in a cage?

Why was the youngest son in a pad locked, wooden cage? It doubled as the dog kennel! WTF? Is that what people did back in the day?

reply

Wow, I was thinking the same thing. I was raised in the 50's and I sure was not put in a wooden cage with a lock. Maybe it was supposed to be like a play pen? And what was with his low language skills? I have no clue but the rest of the movie was hilarious.

reply

The cage was meant to be a joke because the kid was incorrigible.

This.

It looked like two play pens, one up-ended on top of the other. DD mentioned that he could pick any lock and escape anything - I think it was a last option - and yes, it was a joke.

In 1967, my mother in law had to jury rig a set up like that for my sister in law. LOL.
Once she actually "hopped" her play pen across the lawn and into the street. People actually used to put the kids on the front lawn, alone!

I'm just shy that way

Are you saying people DON'T do that nowadays? Why? Are they afraid a kidnapper will come along and snatch the child when they're not looking?

Parents these days are totally paranoid.

All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

In the 1960s and before, children played outside freely, not only in the front yard, but all over the neighborhood, with no adults watching, every day. Today the concept is called "free-range", but back then it was just regarded as "normal". I am very thankful that I was a kid then, and not now. My mom would sometimes set my baby brother's wooden playpen up on the front lawn so he could get some sun and fresh air. She would not stay there watching every minute, so sometimes he was alone. This was not unusual, and it caused no harm.

Early on in the movie, Mrs. McKay explains that the baby is in the cage because he can pick locks - presumably she means door locks. Of course, if he can pick locks, he should be able to get out of the cage, also.

Obviously not! Pretty much every character in the movie was surprised to see the cage and asked the reason for it. It was meant as a joke.

At the end, I was shocked to see the baby sitting on window sill upstairs

Yeah, it made me go "wtf" for a moment, too.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

Didn't one of the Babysitters ask, if , the Little Boy was backward?

reply

I was pretty creeped out by the baby's vocalizations, ... like no baby I ever heard. It was more like some peculiar woman with a high pitched voice and the hiccups. Who thought THAT was a good idea?
