Fellini is not a great film maker. He's not even a good film maker. To place him on the same level with the greats is an insult to the greats. He is completely self-indulgent. His films are pretentious, smug, and worse of all boring. He is not a visionary, but a phony. This movie is just a clear example of that.
La Dolce Vita has no plot and is exceedingly dull at a run time of 3 hours long. Gone With the Wind, the Godfather, and Titanic-- I can see as deserving of 3 hours, but this piece of triviality could have been told in 10 minutes. It's been a long time since a movie has inspired so much hatred in me for what was on the screen. I would rather be subjected to a Jennifer Lopez movie marathon, starting with Gigli than to go through another viewing of this never ending tortuous meaningless journey through Marcello's vapid existence. In fact, throw in a Ben Affleck marathon while you are at it starting with Surving Christmas and I'd still gladly take that torture then another Fellini "classic." I've tried to like Fellini and this about the fifth movie I've seen of his and I'm sorry but he is not brilliant. Fellini should take lessons from Goddard on what a cool movie is supposed to be like.

"inlovewithmovies", i feel your pain. i have seen three Fellini films & i can't stand them. you're not alone in believing that a plot is not too much to ask for, in a movie. people go to movies to be entertained & to escape from reality, so the excuse that "this movie is supposed to be like real life, where nothing happens", doesn't stand because real life is full of drama, comedy & horror, that is why we have good movies like The Godfather & Titanic (to name a few) - if the person we follow is boring, yes, the story will be boring, but why would you want to watch that?

Much noise of nothing ...

Cinema lovers got different tastes and we must respect them.

But, for me ... LA DOLCE VITA is one of the greatest films of all time. It´s different short stories united by Mastroianni character is just a kind of, lets say, review, critic, satire of High Society in Italy.

There are films for example, that even for the Hype, i dont like. In the case of Fellini, "8 1/2" have never been of my taste. But i still think that Fellini is a great director (La Strada - Please Giuletta MasinA!!!)

I'm not a great fan of Godard myself. Films like Masculine Feminine and Breathless aren't exactly plot driven either.

Personally I love this film, and 8 1/2, not because I am suppost to, but because they are more than genre, or plot or characters arcs. They have more in common with music, and they evoke a feel and emotion, which is unexplainable. They are full of beautiful imagry and symbolism, and each time you watch them, if you are open, you can discover layer upon layer. I apreciate these films, because having grown up in the 80's, in a time of formulaic box office driven films, which give you all of the answers. I feel as if, the movie is mine, because I get to see it whatever way I do.

I have a soft spot for Lethal Weapon and Die Hard as well, because they are great action movies, and I have fondness for a movie like The color purple, because they are what they are. Great movies. Speilberg's films mean a lot to people, and he has been succesful because he affirms the fact that everything will be okay. At the end of his films, despite it even being the end of the world, everything will be okay. He has a very set value system for his films, and he create great magic filmic moments. His movies mean a lot to me as well.

You have to look at each movie seperately for what it is, and it is important for some people like Fellini, to make more significant movies.

People that state that Person X is "so" overrated, should die in severe pain. I mean it, when I hear things like that, I take out my revolver...
