racist?
I found the depiction of the Congolese purposefully racist replete with colonialist perceptions. They were guided by "witch doctors' , they wear "savage" ornaments. Did anyone else find this troubling?
shareNo. First of all this film is a drama and not a political statement. Secondly it is a film from 1959 depicting situations in the 1930's so it should be judged with those periods in mind. Thirdly the hyper sensitive interpretation of the term "racism" of some isn't necessarily the norm today. Some people love to get angry over depictions in films of 66 years ago but seem to sleep well over all sorts of racist wars and racist murders and other crimes that happen today. When some form of media is deemed "racist" in 2025 I almost instantly have my doubts.
