Probably brilliant at the time, but doesn't stand up to modern movies

Every Wednesday I head over to my dad's for dinner with him and my brothers. I bring over a movie for us to watch after dinner, and lately I've been going down the imdb top 250 list to try and find movies that none (or almost none) of us have seen. This is the 2nd "old movie" that I brought over, the first being The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Both disappointed all of us. Especially given the very high rating here on imdb.

My dad says that this was cutting edge back in the day, but laughingly admits to how dated it is compared to newer movies. Same with the Eastwood picture. Watching these is like watching old sports games from the 50's where the average football lineman was around 6'0" 250, or the average 40yd dash time was 5 sec, etc... the greatest of an era might not even make it to the pros of today. That's how I feel about these movies, NxNW in particular.

This felt like an early James Bond movie, or maybe a Bourne movie. Yet, everything about it is slower, less exciting, less entertaining. No exciting fights, minimal stunts, obvious set-pieces (we watched it on bluray, which after reading the forums here seems to magnify the obviousness of old sfx).

There's also just something about the way people talk and behave in old movies versus new. The dialogue is stilted and fake. Everyone is prim and proper, no swearing, etc...it's the type of acting you would expect in a play rather than a window into real life.

Getting into specific scenes, the plane scene was laughable. It was like someone thought, "What would be the most difficult way to kill someone? Oh, I know, try to run him down with a prop plane, which would cause the plane to crash and kill everyone inside. Or wait, let's try to gun him down while flying at 200mph instead of doing a drive-by or waiting in the field with a rifle." And then it crashes into the tanker truck which isn't even moving at the time they crash into it? Wow.

I think this movie's rating is held up by nostalgic memories of people seeing it as kids and how impressive it was back then. If you put this movie in a room of 20-40yr olds who've never seen it or heard of it, it would fall off the top 250 like a rock. But hey, maybe that's true of all old movies, and the rating system is supposed to be relevant to the time the movie was made. If that's the case, and someone going down the list is simply looking for the best movies ever made, then most old movies should be skipped because people have just gotten better at making movies and have more tools available to them now. Much like a 1950's Cadillac, what was great then, wouldn't even sell today.

6/10 rating from me. Watch it to say you have, but wouldn't watch a 2nd time.

p.s. I really liked 12 angry men, which is probably one of the only old movies I thought was good. Maybe because it's all just in one room and psychology is the same today as it was then.

Just how well will many of today's movies stand up when:
1) You have the hero killing dozens of people while he evades bullets
2) The hero saving the life of the romantic interest every 30 seconds (hello, Titanic)
3) For historical fiction pieces, you have the female lead fighting in the battles (hello, Robin Hood), when that would not have happened in that time
4) You have the hero jumping off buildings or bouncing off cars going 100MPH+ and getting up as if nothing happenned.

Most movies back then, just like the ones today, are pure entertainment- nothing more nothing less.

Yes, there are parts of NbNW that are dated, just like many of today's films will be in another 25 years or less. I scored this film a 10 on IMDB several years ago and may go in and revise to a 9 because it has aged.

Some old films- pre ratings system- that stand up well IMO, are
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Rear Window
Notorious (this & RW are Hitch's finest IMO)
White Heat
Twelve O'Clock High
On the Waterfront
A Streetcar Named Desire
Roman Holiday
Judgment at Nuremberg
The Cincinnati Kid

I find this post in no way a proper review or critique for this film (which is the intention of these boards) It is simply only a revelation of your lack of understanding and respect. I personally don't see any logical reason why you are comparing this film to modern films. Your reception on watching these "old" films is clearly disappointing because you expect modern effects and editing. I don't think you have the respect and appreciation for films such as North by Northwest, because you might not understand that with a film like this, there wouldn't be nearly as much of the popular thrillers you see today. There is a difference between not enjoying a movie for what you want, and not enjoying a movie for what it is.

This movie is so much better than the modern movies we have nowadays. Flashy editing and special effects do not make a great movie, which this one clearly is.

I kind of agree.

I'm wondering which modern movies ryan likes better than this. As for the plane sequence yes it is ridiculous. So what. The film ends with a chase on Mt. Rushmore. Obviously the movie is not REALISTIC but it is FUN.

How can you not like Good, Bad, and the Ugly. I am sorry but I am only 18 and I know it is one of the greatest movies ever made. No offense, but you have very bad taste in movies. I take it you like movies like xXx and Ricky Bobby?

While I rated the film 9/10 and enjoyed it, I do agree with most of the OP's points. While the plane scene was fantastic and I can see why people praise it so much, how it ends felt strange to me. Why would they crash? Were they going on a suicide mission. That scene was great but the ending of it was poor however the scene is still one of the best cinematic moments of cinema in my opinion.

What he/ she says about the sets is true but it never bothered me because they did not have a lot available at the time. Yes it does not look real but the scene is still enjoyable to watch. The cliff and the plane scene were very exciting but the drunk driving scene did not have an sense of excitement because it did not look real.

In some ways the film has not aged too well but is still enjoyable. The way characters acted did not match how they would act today but this because the film was set many years ago. I can't say that it is timeless but it can still be watched by someone similar to myself who has never seen it before and was born long after the films release.

Dont worry! Im 20 and just watched it for the first time today! I loved it!

The way I can instantly tell it was better than any spy movie today:

Violence was used very sparingly; and every shot fired in the movie i FELT, the violence in this movie is brilliantly concealed; the knife in the back comes from nowhere and knocks you off your feet! When our hero gets a gun pointed at him we feel scared! It is these emotions combined with a hysterical plot that made me love this film. Either Hitchcock got lucky or he intended it; but it truly is an amazing and poignant critique on modern spy movies! The plot is tricky and tongue in cheek; the crop duster scene is brilliant and ludicrous; and both the heroes and villians get lucky so many times; but its grounded in realism.

This I'd give a 9.5; i loved it and the 130 minutes flew by.

Age has nothing to do with it, I'm only 22 and I love this movie, as I like alot of movies from the 30s-40s-50s and 60s. Especially the Noirs. Sure, there are some people in my age category/generation that don't like older movies because they think they're out of style, ya whatever lol.

what bullsh*t. it's like saying bullitt's car chase is sh*t cause post-90s ones are more spectacular.

I found NXNW vastly more entertaining and rivetting than modern movies. It is more stylish and the characters are more intriguing. The spectacles of overproduction we are exposed to today aren't the least bit memorable. The CGI used in them is inferior in many ways to the special effects and stunts of years ago. I am constantly aware while watching it that it is....CGI.

The car chases in today's movies are so ridiculously fakey that I cannot even take them seriously. Fight scenes? No Bruce Lee scenes today. There will be 4 camera change shots within 2 seconds of the fight today. The fakiness of today's CGI and camera shot changes every 2 seconds (not to mention the incredible lack of writing talent) make today's Hollywood a dark era in big budget American movies.
