Is it better than vertigo.

What do you guys think is it better than vertigo.

reply

North By Northwest is pretty much a screwball comedy. It does have it's moments and some classic sequences but top to bottom, Vertigo is a more interesting film in my opinion. I find it pretty flawed (the ending wa sore try cheap) but it is a top 5 Hitchcock film, whereas North by Northwest is in the top 10.. maybe. Heck.. I'll tKe the Birds over NbyNW.

reply

What then, sir, are your top 10? I prefer NxNW & Psycho, and Shadow of a Doubt, Strangers on a Train, and The Lady Vanishes to Vertigo, which I would place at number 6.

reply

1.Strangers on a Train
2.Psycho
3.Rear Window
4.Vertigo
5.Dial M for Murder
6.Rebecca
7.Rope
8.Notorious
9.The Lady Vanishes
10.The 39 Steps

I don't think that North by Northwest is a bad film.. it's ok. I just think that Hitchcock has done far better.
Strangers, Psycho and Rear Window are all 10s in my opinion. After those three there is a considerable drop off.

reply

Oops.. The Birds should be at number 6, so everything shifts down one after that. The 39 Steps does not m?k? my top 10.

reply

Not really similar. That's like saying it's better than Psycho or that Apocalypse Now is better than Peggy Sue Got Married.

reply

I think so . Vertigo is such an over rated picture . NBNW , the birds , psycho aren't dated at all .

reply

I don't think so, NBNW I thought was good but I felt the last act kind of let me down. I feel like his name shouldn't have been cleared until the very end, when they cleared his name so early on it kind of relieved the tension. I also heard the Mt. Rushmore sequence was so thrilling but I was letdown by it although this could be due to the limited resources available in 1959. Vertigo kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Out of the Hitchcock films I've seen this is how I would rank them:

1) Psycho
2) Vertigo
3) The Birds
4) North By Northwest
5) Dial M For Murder
6) Rear Window

"North" has a nice linear soul to it. "Vertigo" is mish-mash.

"North" employs Mason & Landau, 2 of my favorites. I'm not crazy about Marie Saint but I can tolerate her here. I got no other choice.

I've only been able to enjoy Novak in "Middle of the Night."

I find "Vertigo" irritating with a foreign feel to it.

reply

I disagree, I adore "Vertigo" and think "NbNW" isn't anything special. But I don't mind if you disagree, and I can see why some people might prefer the lighter "NbNW" to a descent into madness.

Really, I don't find "NbNW" particularly suspenseful, engaging, or funny, same for "To Catch a Thief". I adore Cary Grant, but I don't think his work with Hitchcock was the best of his career. Grant was a master of comedy, and Hitchcock was not.

reply

They are both great but yeah this is slightly better. both 10/10 for me btw

reply

It's my favorite Hitchcock movie. Better than Vertigo, The Birds and even Psycho (although it's super close).

reply

Vertigo be all like more artsy and stuff but North by Northwest is a better movie for watching a movie. It's Hitchcock at the height of his powers, and one could argue it is the quintessential Hitchcock film. It's got all his stuff in there. Plus, Cary Grant is much more entertaining than what's-his-name.
