You know it’s interesting because in the original story she’s nothing like that but is simply described (from Henry’s point of view as I recall) as being more social than he is.

I agree that she is awful here, but it does make me wonder what she had endured up to this point to make her this way. Henry is charming to us, but only because we see that brief funny side of him.

Oh, I completely agree that she's cruel, but she alludes to things that may have led her there. Like Henry screwing up his career because he can't balance it with his work, very doing anything social, etc.

I'm sure he was trying, and she chose a childish and mean spirited way to deal with it.
