Classic episodes you can't stand

"The Howling Man" and "The Invaders." I imagine if I had seen either of these for the first time when I was eight my fondness for them would be off the charts. Watching them, however, while well into adulthood, they're straight horror exercises that mostly come across as juvenile and outdated.

Any episode the man shot on video tape. Why he got cheap like that in the middle of this phenomenon is inexplicable.

For a man who had such extraordinary vision---he was tragically myopic on this decision.

reply

The videotaped episodes? Those were somebody else's idea first of all - an effort to reign in the budget and save a little. However, when the folks concerned took a look at the balance sheet and factored in all the other junk associated with using videotape at the time, the effort was scrapped. In other words, it wasn't Rod Serling's idea. Put on some dry pants and be happy there were only 6 videotaped episodes. Tragically myopic? Inexplicable? Work for a tight-ass and you may find that life at times isn't fair.

reply

It was his production company, doug.

reply

Whether Serling owned the production company or not is entirely irrelevant. The bankroll came from elsewhere.

reply

It was his creation. His property. He took the accolades, and well deserved they were & are. It ain't going to smear his legacy for him to take the hit(s).

reply

Culburn, I have to jump in here. You are quite the idiot.

Serling HATED CBS' insistence on shooting on videotape. He fought against it, and finally got his way.

reply

I’m not a fan of video tape in general but it adds to the creepiness of Twenty Two.

reply

The Howling Man gets tiresome.

reply

I can't stand Kick the Can.

reply

Agreed.

reply

i hate that episode so much

reply

When you reach the age of its characters, you might feel differently.

To tell you the truth I never really thought about it til I read this question. There’s really not much that I “can’t stand” regarding the TZ classic episodes. They’re all unique in their own way, even the one’s that aren’t my favorites still have their own appeal. I’lll still watch them come what may. There may be ones that I’ll skip during a marathon where I won’t bother to tune in & take a break but that doesn’t mean I can’t “stand them”.

I did see most of the Twilight Zones when I was around 8, and I never liked 95% of them for exactly the reason you mentioned, they were campy and silly. On TV around the same time was the Outer Limits which was the exact opposite, I loved 95+% of them.
