Remake of Shadow of a Doubt
I wish I had known that they had produced a remake in 1958, 15 years later! I would have watched them back to back. Remaking a film by Hitchcock will probably always be a failed exercise, and this remake is obviously not as imaginative, insightful, visually powerful or engaging as the original, but it's worth a watch, just to see what another director can do with the same material. Gordon McDonell is credited in both movies.
The changes are interesting and they are probably implemented to accommodate the budget constraints and the shorter runtime. And for Universal backlot fans, this is a treat because you get to see a lot of those famous streets. Don't miss the incident with the car at the end as you get a quick glimpse of the backlot but from an unusual angle: structures and scaffoldings are visible, as if shown from the back, something we're not supposed to see.
