Maybe, maybe not...
Its the first movie he got to experience with wide screen, and I think no one has surpassed him ever since. He fills the frame like no other. Genius. One of my favorites.

i'd also go with Dersu Uzala as most underrated, or at least most underappreciated. This was a great film, very entertaining, but I agree with someone else who said it is more of a commercial film than a personal artistic message. i guess there is something to be said about "class" and rank in the film. I agree about Kurosawa's camerawork, I think his camerawork and frame compositions is/was the best in the business. Best I've seen anyway.

Tarantino movies are like arcade style video games.

reply

don't totally write off the cinematographer. the camerawork doesn't all belong to kurosawa

reply

well true. but he painted his own storyboards to show what he wanted in the shots. they say bergman's cinematographer was great. in this case i think it is mostly kurosawa who is great. : )

It's unfair to compare this to films like The Seven Samurai, Throne Of Blood and Ran- being they are completely different genre and tone. Critics tend to deem superior films as being those whch are externally 'arty'- adventure films are looked down upon- yet why. Must it be misery inducing in order to stand alongside those other greats.

The Hidden Fortress is a wonderful film, that takes a 'limiting' genre and create something that is huge in scope, moral and full of individuality. What other adventure film centres around two squabbling unherioc slobs? Its concepts were also very influential on the 'group adventure' films that followed, esecially Star Wars (Lucas apparantly based R2D2 and CP30 on the two peasants) and the lark.

I also think The Hidden Fortress features the best strong 'morally good' female character. That's my only quibble about Kurosawa, his female characters usually tend to be clearly supportive (SS, Drunken Angel, Ikuru), evil (Ran, Throne Of Blood) or extremely dubious (Rashomon). Princess Yuki is a great stamp on that period of Japanese film making.

Its pretty funny how the princess yells out all her lines.. kind of like a female Samuel L Jackson but with higher pitch and distortion. :)

I think Sanjuro is the most underrated of Kurosawa's films. People seem to dismiss it because it is less serious or more lightweight, but I think it is more fun and entertaining then Yojimbo and I have watched it more times then any of his other films.

reply

How about The Lower Depths?
Isn't it underrated as well?
I thought it was amazing the way he transposed a stage play to film without betraying either medium.

How about studio-mutilated and butchered THE IDIOT (HAKUCHI)? The film is amazing, the transformation of Dostoyevsky's 19th century Russia into after WWII Japan is amazing.
