Does anyone else find this deadly dull?

I want to make a few things clear: I love romantic movies ("Moonstruck" is probably my favorite); I love Cary Grant AND Ingrid Bergman and I have no problem with movies that are all talk...as long as the talk is INTERESTING! Literall nothing happens! Bergman and Grant meet and fall in love...and wander around London...and go out to eat...and talk endlessly about nothing even remotely interesting. It was only the effortless charisma of the two leads that kept me watching...but after 50 minutes I was bored silly and just fed up with it. I love old movies but I can see why this one is obscure!

I'm pretty young too, but I watch a lot of old movies and loved this. Sure, it's slight, and not as happening as Charade or maybe even To Catch a Thief. But it's so great to see Ingrid Bergman in a rare comic performance. And how refreshing to see Cary Grant at this stage of his career paired with a woman of a similar age. Is this either star's best movie? Of course not. It's not even their best together (Notorious is a brilliant masterpiece). But look at the two megastars we're talking about. They're just so substantial onscreen together.

Indiscreet is a wonderful little trifle. Sure, the first half lacks conflict, and what little conflict there is surrounding a married man seems dated by today's standards, but it's so charming and timeless in other ways. If you gave up before the end of the first hour, it was too soon, as it does pick up. But honestly, I have to wonder about the taste of anyone who thought the first hour was boring. I'm not one to say that "Stick with your Transformers" crap, but really, if you thought this movie was ever boring, ever less than thoroughly charming, there are so many other films, many of them more acclaimed than this one, that are even slower and hold up even less.

Indiscreet is no Notorious, but i very much enjoyed watching it. It certainly had its comic elements.

reply

Should have had some explosions or transformers or something. Maybe teenage vampires.

I love this movie! Certainly by today's standards it seems pretty tame, but I can imagine that in 1958 it was deemed quite risque to have a well-known stage star having a basically open affair with a "married" man. Grant and Bergman had great chemistry. Too bad they only made two movies together. To compare this romantic comedy with the Hitchcock thriller Notorious, though, is like comparing apples and oranges. Totally different genres, but both excellent films.

Indiscreet was based on an earlier stage play, Kind Sir, starring Charles Boyer and Mary Martin, so that might help explain why it has a bit of a stagey feel with the dialogue and having most of the story take place in and around her apartment. Give me this over car chases and explosions any day!

Grant and Bergman really make this film work despite the rather ordinary plot.

reply

I don't agree that the plot was "ordinary." For a woman to be duped by a man who "is unable to get a divorce...."---what other movie uses that plot?

reply

I'm afraid this movie was just too subtle for you. A great deal happens, in every scene, but it apparently passed you by. "Moonstruck" is to "Indiscreet" as "Goonies" is to "Caddyshack." Cher always plays the same part, herself---which is to say, someone who is determined to appear blase and tough and worldly-wise, but is actually about skin deep. How do I know this? Because I've played that part myself.

reply

Actually I love "Moonstruck" and though Cher was great and remember--she won the Oscar for that role. However she is nowhere near as good as Ingrid Bergman. The problem here is not the actors it's the script. Maybe I saw it on an off night but I've tried to sit through this TWICE and can't make it. Also other people do agree with me. Nothing wrong with a film being subtle but there's a fine between subtle and boring. Unfortunately (for me) this film crosses it.

reply

Not 'boring' exactly, but... disappointing. I love a movie that tries to make me like its characters and take me on detours that have nothing to do with the main plot... Everything in this movie was leading up to the end - there were no other nice bits of business just for the sake of it. It's excellently played, but still pretty simple, and not something I could see myself watching more than once.

I kept waiting for a plot to break out.

This is a great movie, with terrific dialogue and perfect acting. Sorry for you that you can't appreciate it. Oh well, your loss.
