On the cheap but effective and memorable
Be sure to catch it as it really stands out on its own. A lot of location shooting, which adds to the atmosphere of the times, and a restrained performance from Ray Danton, that goes from troubled to wholesome to sinister. There probably was a bit of pressure on the part of Universal to keep it neat and tidy, but it's never bland or generic. Don't miss that shot when the camera, following Danton, tilts suddenly, showing him going all psycho. Which incidentally also happens at a motel. And there are stories of birds!
