This movie, without question, should be in the AFI's top 100 films. Andy Griffith's performance is nothing short of spectacular, and this film has become so real today.
If you agree, put a post here. Let's see if we can start a petition or something; replace Titanic with this!
Absolutely agree! This movie is a lost gem and Andy Griffith is dynamic and amazing. Too bad he didn't make better use of his GREAT talent. I love the Andy Griffith show but this movie shows us what could have been.
By golly, this movie should be #1 or # 2...or #3. And I'm not sayin that because I'm a fan of the movie. This film could quite possibly be the greatest film of all time and about two thousand people in the world know about it. But seriously if it was up to me I'd put Godfather as #1 though...so this would be either 2 or 3.
Absolutely right on all counts...this shouldve been in the top 250, but Kazan was more known for On the Waterfront - and the subversive-political subtext may have limited it as well.
Nonetheless, brilliant performances (all time best?) by Andy Griffith and a standout performance by Walter Matthau.
Over the top Andy Griffith, showing a completely different character than the downhome NC Sherrif and No time for Sergeants. Typical Elia Kazan movie, vaguely subversive, anti-hero but also ringing possibly true. Kinda makes you think twice about Clinton and Huckabee both. Interesting Mike Wallace was in the cast.
Never have seen all of it but watched it tonight on TCM. One of my favorite movies that I've watched recently. Love the Andy Griffith show when I was growing up but this shows a whole entire side of him. Almost reminds me of Heath Ledger's Joker at some points in that he is totally over the top and driven by his inner madness. Some people are critical that the film is way over the top but that is exactly the intent. The Vitajex montage sequence was well done and really seemed to be groundbreaking for the 50's in the manner it was paced and the large dollops of sexuality. The entire movie is an intentionally absurdist skewed take on the influence of mass media and I just lapped it up because of that.
