did anyone like 12 Angry Men better?
This beat it for best picture. I liked them both but thought 12 Angry Men was better.

I'd say they're about equal.
Though of course you're comparing two every different films - one an epic and the other a chamber piece.

The Oscars don't care. They put The Exorcist up against The Sting and Saving Private Ryan up against Shakespeare in Love.

kurtm7,
Nothing to add to your response. I think you hit the nail on the head.
I think 12 angry men is better and should have won best picture but I like this movie
share12 Angry Men, to me, has many more powerful performances. The cinematography here is great, but 12 Angry Men deserved "Best Picture".
If you're not taking any steps forward, you're not moving at all.
I'd love to have been present at the Academy's deliberations on this one. Both are magnificent films, in very different ways. I think the scope and scale of BOTRK is deserving of recognition though. If you think about it 12 Angry Men was a rather minimalist type of film-making. Not to denigrate it. It was a wonderful screenplay, with wonderful actors, and some very interesting photography considering the limitations.
I would have voted Bridge on the River Kwai as Best Picture. I think it was right.
I love 'em both, but BotRK is better. For one thing, it's more cathartic to watch the Japanese bridge destroyed than it is to watch a probable murderer be acquitted. Maybe we should split the difference and give the Best Picture to these two films' missing link -- Paths of Glory.
