Bart
Am I the only one who prefers Bart to Bret (or Beau or Brent)?

Put me down as someone who also loves Bart and Jack Kelly as well. I would also agree with what others have said that for Jack Kelly Maverick was one of the all time best working experiences he ever had. And anything that came after Maverick ended I think for him paled in comparison. Question what is it about Jack Kelly/Bart that is so appealing for a lot of women on this board.

I LOVED the word you used to describe Bart/Jack Kelly. And believe me KAVORKA is the appropiate word to describe Bart and Jack Kelly during his MAVERICK years. I have seen most of the Maverick episodes, And I can't get over how many women Bart/Jack Kelly got to kiss when he did Maverick. And his appeal with women was ALL OVER THE PLACE.
shareI'm a Bart man.
shareIndividual preferences aside, James Garner was alwaysa more popular. Producers returned to Garner to reprise "Bret" while Jack Kelly was pretty much forgotten. (Don't get me wrong, I like Bart, too).
shareTo repeat what I wrote on another thread, I liked Jack Kelly slightly better than Jim Garner when I watched the original airing of the show as a child.
But now that I get to TIVO two episodes every day, I have changed my mind: Jack Kelly was FAR better than Jim Garner was. He was more suave; more roguish, nore charming, more self deprecating, funnier, and yes, more handsome.
As a child, I dreamed of growing up to look like either William Holden or Jack Kelly. (Needless to say, the dream didn't come true.)
Maverick was a steppingstone for James Garner in a long, fruitful career in films and TV. Unfortunately for Jack Kelly, Maverick was the pinnacle of his career. Never again was he nearly as successful.
shareI, too, prefer Bart over Bret.
I'm a relative newcomer to the Maverick universe, but since it started running on the local STARZ Westerns channel just a couple of months ago, I have found myself anxiously awaiting each episode, even the ones I've already seen. I find that the show has a timeless charm, humour and panache that wears well in a show of that era.
Personally, I've never been a huge fan of James Garner; mostly because I never thought he was the stud everyone else seemed to think he was. However, I do like his sensible, down-to-earth mentality, both as a person and in the characters he's played. He wasn't a hero, he was the "everyman," and I think that was his biggest draw as the character Bret Maverick.
Jack Kelly as Bart, on the other hand, was better looking and much more charming than Bret. He was also humourous in an understated way. I don't think he was given much of a chance by the producers of the day so they didn't see what we, as fans, see.
When I first started watching the series and saw the episodes with Bart played by Jack Kelly, I remember thinking, "Who the hell is that guy? I've never heard of him." After doing some research, I found out why. Mrmine is right, this show was the pinnacle of Jack's career as he didn't do much after this, but what a pinnacle!
To me, James Garner will always be Rockford. Jack Kelly is MY Maverick.
Readergrl- Jack Kelly is MY Maverick too. I love him so much it HURTS. If you are interested to know why I will fill you in on everything that I know about Jack and MAVERICK. If you are curious.
shareI have always loved James Garner in his movies and have just started watching Maverick because of him, but I too have come to appreciate and love Jack kelly even more. His Bart is sexy, and suave.
shareI much-prefer Bart! When a Bret episode comes on, I don't pay much attention, lol. Sorry to offend Garner fans, but to me, he had a dopey look and I didn't find him handsome at all, while I find Jack Kelly to be very handsome. He was also a better dramatic actor than Garner, in my opinion.
sharePlease spill. Handsome does not begin to describe him.
I was sorry to read in this thread that he had died. rip
"Now are we sure. that this. is what. we want?"
